Nokia's new flagship Lumia 1520 is big news and a big phone. The company's first "phablet" Windows Phone, it marks the debut of official 1080p screen support in version 8.1 of Microsoft's platform, not to mention a further distillation of Nokia's investment into PureView camera technology down into the mass market. It's also the device that Nokia hopes will rival top-tier iPhone and Android handsets that, so far, it has struggled to compete with. Instagram for Windows Phone is just a few weeks away, Microsoft and Nokia have confirmed, with the much-anticipated photo sharing app one of a range of new titles for the platform. Nokia's biggest Windows Phone to-date, the Lumia 1520 runs the latest version of Microsoft's smartphone platform on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 2.2GHz quadcore, with LTE and a 3,400 mAh battery that's even bigger than what's inside HTC's One max.

Microsoft Windows Phone “WebApps” latest subtle invitation to developers

Microsoft has created a bevy of "WebApps" for Windows Phone based on almost 50 popular and commercial websites like Southwest Airlines, Cars.com, TV.com, Listverse and Billboard. The WebApps live on the homescreen with the rest of the apps, but they are essentially the same as the websites they correspond to. The apps do not simply scrape content from the websites, but they do render the same website data in-app.

It would seem that one of the biggest names behind the touchscreens you use every day, Synaptics, have made the push for a next-generation solution for Windows 8.1 with Active Pen abilities. What this means for future Windows 8.1 device makers is that they'll be able to say they've got pen support right out of the box and/or include a pen with the device they're creating. In what may prove to be a situation similar to what we've seen with the rather successful Samsung Galaxy Note series, the folks at Synaptics are making pen usage on devices - both mobile and stationary - a feature baked in at a hardware level.

Nokia Netflix bundle in Lumia 1020 promo [Update: confirmed plus 925 & 625]

Nokia will bundle Netflix streaming video access with new purchases of the Lumia 1020 on select carriers, it's reported, with the media subscription aiming to sweeten the deal in the competitive UK market over the holiday period. Purchases of the 41-megapixel Windows Phone on carrier Vodafone UK will get a year's use of Netflix bundled, the Financial Times [registration required] reports, while at least one retailer, Phones4U, is offering six months of Netflix on a range of Lumia handsets.
