Verizon Samsung Omnia price cut to $199.99

Less than a week on the market, and Verizon have already dropped the price of the Samsung Omnia.  The touchscreen smartphone now retails from $199.99 with a new two-year contract, thanks to a $70 mail-in rebate.  The move is likely a response to Apple's pricing for the iPhone 3G. Mio GPS WM6.1 smartphone & 3G MID coming Q1 2009?

Mio are set to take on Garmin's nuvifone next year, with a GPS-enabled 3.5G Windows Mobile smartphone.  The device, which according to company sources will land in Q1 2009, will have a touchscreen interface with a self-designed GUI called Spirit on top of WM6.1 Pro.  Qualcomm's 3.5G high-speed mobile chipset will be relied on for connectivity. Samsung Omnia on Verizon Review

We have been waiting a long time to get our hands on a US-spec version of the Samsung Omnia and finally the time has come. Verizon Wireless was the lucky carrier to get the smartphone, complete with fresh compatibility with EVDO Rev.A. Very similar to the Samsung Behold, the Omnia runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional with the familiar TouchWiz interface. SlashGear had the chance to see just how well the Samsung Omnia holds up to all the hype.

Verizon Samsung Omnia SCH-i910 announced for $249.99

Verizon Wireless have announced the CDMA version of the Samsung Omnia, the SCH-i910, complete with a 3.2-inch touchscreen display, 5-megapixel camera with flash, and WiFi b/g.  The Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro handset has Samsung's TouchWiz GUI overlay, offering customizable widgets that work with the Omnia's haptic feedback.  There's also an optical mouse. Pantech Duo 2 clears FCC

The Pantech Duo 2 has cleared the FCC, with the same dual-sliding design - incorporating both numeric and QWERTY keyboards - but now running Windows Mobile 6.1.  The original Duo was better known as the Helio Ocean, but there was also a GSM version on AT&T.  The Duo 2 (aka the C820) has a 2-megapixel camera and dual-band 850/1900 GSM/EDGE/WCDMA. Motorola Atila WM6.1 touchscreen smartphone in the wild

Shots of the Motorola Atila touchscreen smartphone have leaked, showing off among other things the company's new theme for Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro (another, Apple-inspired theme is shown after the cut).  The Atila is quadband GSM and triband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA, capable of 7.2Mbps downloads and 1.8Mbps uploads (network depending); control is via a 2.8-inch QVGA 240 x 320 resistive touchscreen. ASUS P565 800MHz WM6.1 smartphone

ASUS have officially announced their P565 smartphone, a Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro device the claim to fame of which is an 800MHz processor.  According to ASUS, the CPU is good for Vsbenchmark scores near double those of rival handsets.  Other specs include a 2.8-inch VGA touchscreen, HSDPA 3.6Mbps, GPS, WiFi b/g and ASUS' own Glide GUI, an interface similar in concept to HTC's TouchFLO 3D.  Read The Full Story

Windows Mobile App Store coming, confirms Ballmer

While I know it's unlikely to have been prompted by my Touch HD review, it's nice all the same to see that Microsoft are planning their own on-device Windows Mobile App Store.  Speaking at an Australian developers event, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed that the company would be soon launching a service that would allow developers to sell their applications direct to users.  Read The Full Story

Reports have surfaced with photos that are claimed to be world exclusive screenshots of the new Windows Mobile 6.5. SmartphoneFrance.com reports that Steve Balmer, CEO of Microsoft, was very proud to unveil these two screenshots at PDC 2008.
