Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play on sale now: Are you buying?

Just as promised - though in smaller numbers than originally expected - the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play has finally gone on sale, offering PlayStation-style gaming while on the move. The UK, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan will get the handset today, with a further six markets over the next two weeks and then Verizon availability later in the year.

The service comes in a basic offering and a premium offering. The difference is the basic offering at £3.99 monthly gives you streaming of genre specific channels while the premium at £9.99 monthly offers you access to more channels and on demand play of any track the service offers.

Frankly, it's a surprise it's taken them this long. The idea of a PlayStation phone hasn't been so much a persistent rumor as it has a cellular cloud hanging over both Sony and Sony Ericsson. It overshadowed the launch of the PSP Go and has been responsible for untold speculation about terse relations between the divisions. Throw in more pre-announce leaks than average, and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play has quite the reputation to live up to. Sony Ericsson confirms XPERIA Play shipping delay; will miss April 1 release on some carriers

Sony Ericsson has confirmed shipping delays that could mean the XPERIA Play might miss its April 1 release date in the UK at some carriers and vendors. SlashGear was contacted by several XPERIA Play pre-order customers who had received a Vodafone update that, due to a hiccup in Sony Ericsson's delivery process, their pre-orders would not arrive on April 1 as promised.

Sony Ericsson unleashed a bizarre commercial for the Xperia PLAY Android phone that will make most folks go WTF? Titled "The Donor," the commercial posted on YouTube this past Friday is described as telling "the shocking story of how the Android robot really got ready to PLAY." The commercial shows a confused victim telling the police about the story leading up to a horrific crime that later explains how the Android robot got his game-playing thumbs.

Apple’s iPhone has done quite a bit to change the mobile market. It has ushered in the touch-screen craze, delivered an easy way to get third-party programs onto the platform, and generally changed how all other mobile phones are judged. But one of the most significant changes the iPhone initiated was the growth of gaming on smartphones. Thanks to the Apple App Store, more and more people are downloading games like Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, and countless others. The iPhone is now a full-fledged gaming device that, by all measures, can be compared to the Nintendo DS and Sony’s PSP.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play hands-on [Video]

Sony Ericsson's XPERIA Play has been so well leaked already, there's a strange sense of familiarity with the gaming smartphone despite it having only made its official debut at MWC 2011 today. Hands-on, it's an odd combination of the familiar from Android and PSP, and during gameplay it certainly feels fast enough. We demo'd Bruce Lee: Dragon Warrior, FIFA '10 and Asphalt 6, and all three were slick and responsive.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play debuts

Sony Ericsson has officially launched the XPERIA Play, its PlayStation gaming phone, at MWC 2011. As we've already seen well previewed, the XPERIA Play has a slide-out gaming keypad behind a 4-inch 854 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, and will come loaded with Sony Ericsson's own gaming download store. Sony Ericsson has also confirmed that the XPERIA Play will be coming to Verizon as the first US carrier, sometime this spring.
