Samsung Galaxy S II ships 3m in 55 days, setting new company record

Samsung has announced that it has sold three million of its Galaxy S II smartphones in 55 days, setting a new record for the company and meaning a GSII was bought every 1.5 seconds. That's without official North American availability; the Galaxy S II - which has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and is the thinnest smartphone on the market at 8.49mm thick - is yet to go on sale in the US, though carrier versions have been well rumored. Apple, E Ink, ITRI and Samsung Top Field in SID 2011 Display Awards

The Society for Information Display (SID) sent out their top Gold awards to the groups they felt deserved recognition in the area of global advancement of electronic display technology. Lots of words there adding up to SID being the authority on telling people which manufacturers are putting out the best displays. This year's Display of the Year awards are what the press release below notes as easily subtitled the “Up Close and Personal” awards. Big winners include Apple, E Ink, and Samsung. Apple’s patent suit claims Samsung copied the “look and feel” of their user interface, including having a grid of colorful square icons with uniformly rounded corners, a bottom row “Springboard” of square icons, and an overall rectangular product shape that has four uniformly rounded corners. The TouchWiz UI resemblance to Apple’s iOS UI is certainly there, but it will still be one tough legal battle with Samsung fighting back that will bring plenty of analysis on its implications for Apple and the smartphone/tablet industry as a whole. But, let’s just imagine for fun if Samsung were to lose on the UI design battlefront…

Vodafone leads Galaxy S Android 2.3 Gingerbread push in UK

Having been spotted in the wilds over the weekend, the Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.3 Gingerbread update has now splashed down in the UK. Carrier Vodafone is seemingly the first to offer the new firmware, which brings the updated Android keyboard, UI and other enhancements to the Super AMOLED smartphone. Read The Full Story

Samsung releases Gingerbread for Galaxy S

The much-anticipated Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread update for the Samsung Galaxy S has begun to roll out to European users of the smartphone. Promised for mid-April - and dropping bang in the middle of the month - the new firmware was spotted by xda-developers, and reportedly adds an extra turn of speed to the Super AMOLED handset. Samsung has outed its latest iteration of the Galaxy S, the Samsung Galaxy S Plus i9001. Initially headed to Russia at the end of April - where it will launch as the Galaxy S 2011 Edition - the new version packs a 1.4GHz processor along with the same 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display of the original. Android browsing 52% faster than iPhone? Maybe, maybe not…

The mobile browser speed wars continue, and the latest fray comes courtesy of website optimization firm Blaze with claims that Android is 52-percent faster than iPhone, and quicker – in real-world testing – on 84-percent of sites. That’s despite Apple’s much-vaunted Nitro JavaScript engine, new to iOS 4.3 on the iPhone and iPad 2. We spoke to Blaze to find out more about the testing process, and in what ways the company was interpreting the results.

Samsung Galaxy S Gingerbread ROM leaks

Samsung has already promised Gingerbread for the Galaxy S sometime this month, but what looks to be the official build has already leaked out. SmartDroid caught an Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S in the wild, complete with TouchWiz 4 - the updated version of Samsung's custom UI - though it's still described as a beta. It's also only for the original GT-i9000 (i.e. the untampered European version), so anybody with a Galaxy S family device in North America will have to wait. Read The Full Story

Gingerbread for Galaxy S in March confirms Samsung

Samsung Germany has apparently confirmed that the Galaxy S will get an Android 2.3 Gingerbread update in March 2011. The news was revealed at a Samsung blogger event in Frankfurt today, and tweeted out by Frank Feil according to SmartDroid. Read The Full Story

Android 2.2 for Samsung Captivate? Maybe.

When Samsung released the Galaxy S seven months ago, they promised users a quick upgrade path to Android 2.2 (Froyo). But that was seven months ago, and so far, nothing, even though Android 2.3 is already on the market and Android 2.4 is coming soon. But there just may be some hope, though it may be faint.
