Should we be surprised that Peek’s TwitterPeek messenger has pretty much fallen flat in its first review?  The dedicated Twitter messenger has been official for less than 24 hours, but already PC Mag have slated its speed and functionality, not to mention questioning its very purpose.  Among the TwitterPeek’s flaws are poor displaying of messages and mediocre handling of user profiles.

As expected, Peek have announced a dedicated Twitter messaging device, the TwitterPeek.  Like the company’s email-centric handhelds, the TwitterPeek aims to do one thing very well rather than multiple things reasonably: it delivers new tweets in real-time, allows for ‘@’ replies, retweeting and direct messaging, and has the same full-QWERTY keyboard as the Peek Pronto.

Peek and Twitter are no strangers – the company announced a tweet aggregator system for the email-centric device back on its one-year anniversary – but it’s looking like they have a more dedicated option in the offing.  Amazon are listing the TwitterPeek, a dedicated “Mobile Tweeting Device” which promises unlimited tweeting in the US and, included in its $199.95 price, lifetime service.

Peek’s tentative steps into offering lifetime service for their straightforward email messaging devices earlier this year met with sell-out success, so it comes as little surprise that the company has officially launched their first full product.  $299.95 bags you a Peek Pronto and no ongoing bills, giving access to unlimited email, Exchange support, texting and more.

Having thrown open the doors – or at least left them more than a little ajar – Peek have announced the latest string to their messaging-device’s bow: Peek Apps.  Launching on the one-year anniversary of the email-centric handheld, Peek Apps isn’t an on-device download store like you would find on the iPhone or Android, but instead the culmination of service mashups that bring Facebook, Twitter and Google Maps to the Peek.

peek indiaThe Peek news keeps on coming today, with SlashGear getting word that an Indian launch of the Pronto is planned within a couple of weeks.  Specific details on which carrier Peek have partnered with are unknown – though due to be announced imminently, we’re told – but subscription costs will be less than the equivalent of $10 per month.

peek pronto 11 141x202 customWith the launch of the Peek Pronto earlier today, offering support for push email and unlimited SMS messaging, we asked the company what that meant for the original Peek emailer and its texting abilities.  According to our source at Peek, the Peek Classic will now be 100-percent email, with no future Classic units offering SMS support.

The Peek Pronto email device tipped last week has been officially launched, offering push email functionality, Microsoft Exchange compatibility and support for up to five email accounts rather than the usual two.  The Pronto is priced at $79.95 and requires the same $19.95 monthly service charge as the original Peek messenger.
