Well, its not hard to find info or pics on the Neonode N2, but what is hard, is actually finding it on shelves. Press event after press event we see the Neonode N2, we hear all about its specs, but I have yet to even see a price let alone a ship date.

I take that back, there is a price, its 439 Euro, or about $600, for the SIM-free model, but that was a few months ago, and back then we actually thought we might see it hit retail sometime soon. The iPhone has surely by now stolen the market for those that would have bought such a device.

From luscious to laughing stock, few know the droop into vaporware status as well as the Neonode chaps.  Their well-documented plan to beat the big cellphone companies at their own game and outshine them with the N1 cellphone turned out to be a tardy, pitiful mess; more recently, the N2 grabbed headlines but little else thanks to an official launch but no release date.  Well, Neonode are hoping to turn that around; the N2 should now be available in multiple European markets, and they’re even planning US and Asia launches sometime next year.

Neonode N1Remember Neonode?  A Swedish cellphone start-up, they announced the N1 touchscreen handset way back in 2002 which was then plagued with delays and production issues.  When it finally hit the market in 2004 it was to mediocre reviews and a public which had got used to better specs from mainstream producers.

Well, yesterday they began a teaser campaign – apparently their product designer is pregnant.  Nothing unusual there, you might think, except for the fact that he’s a man.  Björn Svennson is keeping a blog of the final two weeks before he gives birth on the 12th February, to what scans would indicate is either a new cellphone or a very oddly shaped child.

Neonode’s first handset was almost inked into the annuls of vaporware, so delayed was it, but the company deserves some kudos for even bringing a new-design handset to market no matter how late.  If they’ve solved some of the production problems then hopefully whatever they announce will appear in a far more timely fashion; remember, when first shown the N1 had groundbreaking features, only to see those be gradually adopted by other manufacturers.  I’ll be curious to see what they intend to wow us with at 3GSM.
