Friday is here once again, which means that for many of us, the weekend has already started. Of course, today was the big iPhone 5 launch, and there was no lack of news stories to go along with it. Before the iPhone 5 landed in the US, it launched in the UK and Japan and was greeted by long lines. We also had a couple of drop tests hit the Internet - in the first one we saw, the iPhone 5 didn't fare too well, but in the second drop test, it emerged victorious over the Samsung Galaxy S III. Apple: iOS 6 Maps is “just getting started” (so forgive the bad data)

Apple has defended its contentious Maps app, arguing that it is "just getting started" with the iOS 6 replacement to Google Maps, and highlighting the fact that it can push out updates incredibly quickly. Excitement around iOS 6 quickly got hung up on how the new Maps app fell short, with users reporting missing locations, along with incorrectly labeled roads, points-of-interest, and even cities. "We launched this new map service knowing that it is a major initiative and we are just getting started with it" Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller told the NYTimes. "We are continuously improving it." Welcome to Thursday evening folks - just one more day until the weekend is officially here. iOS 6 has been out for a little more than a day now, and while there are a lot of new features to get excited about, Apple's new Maps app seems to be spoiling the party. Many are bummed that Apple Maps doesn't feature public transportation routes like Google Maps, and a group of developers set out to solve that problem with a new hack. Meanwhile, Nokia took a few shots at Apple Maps today, and we found out that iOS 6 landed on 15% of all Apple devices within the first 24 hours of release. Read The Full Story

Nokia takes a shot at poorly-received Apple Maps app

Today, Apple's new Maps app in iOS 6 has been the subject of a lot of criticism. Some iOS 6 users aren't exactly satisfied with Apple's attempt at entering the navigation space, and Nokia has jumped on the opportunity to talk about its own suite of navigation tools offered to its users. In a post on the Nokia Conversations blog, Nokia's Pino Bonetti compared the company's Location Platform to the competition with a series of benchmarks, taking a few shots at Apple in the process. iOS 6 updates hit 15% of devices in first 24 hours after release

Well this is interesting: it seems that a lot of iDevice owners were quick on the uptake with iOS 6 when the new mobile OS launched yesterday. A new report from analytics firm Chitika (as reported by TechCrunch) says that in the first 24 hours since the release of iOS 6, 15% of iOS users have already downloaded it. That's a significant bump up from the adoption rate of iOS 5, which only managed to arrive on 20% of devices after the first five days. Read The Full Story

Apple Maps hack adds Google public transport directions option

Devious developers have already cooked up a way to bake Google Maps mass transit directions into Apple's iOS 6 Maps app, though the workaround isn't quite ready for primetime yet. Google Transit for iOS 6 is the handiwork of Simon Maddox, adding a Google Directions option to the list of third-party plugins Apple offers for alternative routing, and pulling up results in Safari. Garmin fills iOS 6 Maps gaps with mass transit guidance

Garmin has updated its iOS navigation software to help fill the gaps in the contentious Apple Maps app, with Navigon and StreetPilot Onboard now packing mass transit information along with iOS 6 compatibility. Apple’s free iOS 6 update pushed out to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners yesterday, has already begun provoking strong reactions from users, with the homegrown Maps app singled out for most criticism. Replacing Google Maps on the iPhone 5, Apple’s version has won praise for its eye-catching “flyover” 3D mapping and slick integration with iOS as a whole, but also come under fire for patchy and inaccurate data.

Four Major League Baseball teams now support Passbook for ticketing

MLB Advanced Media has announced that new Major league baseball teams are now supporting ticketing using Passbook on iOS 6.0. I mentioned about a week ago that rumors were pointing to more airlines supporting Passbook. iPhoto for iOS updated to version 1.1

Apple has gone update crazy, ladies and gentlemen. Not only did it release iOS 6 and the OS X Mountain Lion update to 10.8.2 today, but it also updated iPhoto for iOS to version 1.1.
