iOS 6 Maps polarizes Apple fans

Apple’s free iOS 6 update pushed out to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners yesterday, has already begun provoking strong reactions from users, with the homegrown Maps app singled out for most criticism. Replacing Google Maps on the iPhone 5, Apple’s version has won praise for its eye-catching “flyover” 3D mapping and slick integration with iOS as a whole, but also come under fire for patchy and inaccurate data.

Welcome to Wednesday evening everyone! Today brought us HTC's highly-anticipated event, and it did not disappoint. It was there that HTC revealed two brand new Windows Phone 8 devices, the Windows Phone 8X and the Windows Phone 8S. Went went hands-on with both devices not long after they were announced, and shortly before HTC announced that these new phones will be landing at Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile in November. HTC released a video detailing the "design journey" of the 8X and 8S, and Nokia had some choice words about HTC's "innovation" later on in the day. Read The Full Story

Google Maps update for Android available now

Earlier today, we brought you the news that Google was planning to launch a Google Maps update for Android to coincide with the launch of iOS 6. In iOS 6, Apple has cut Google out of the loop, instead opting for a Maps app of its own, so it makes sense that Google would want to launch an Android update around the same time that Apple released iOS 6. Google Maps for Android update reportedly timed for iOS 6 coincide

Google intends to launch a new version of Google Maps for Android to coincide with Apple's release of iOS 6, which will strip the search giant's mapping software from iPhones and iPads. The updated Android app will synchronize better with multiple devices, Google VP of engineering for maps Brian McClendon told the NYTimes, with search results discovered on the desktop more readily available on a mobile device. Amazon picks Nokia Location Platform for mapping service

Shortly before the reveal of Amazon's new line up of Kindle Fire tablets - including a refresh of the original Kindle Fire and the new Kindle Fire HD - we heard whispers that the company was joining forces with Nokia for its mapping service. The rumor didn't come as much of a surprise, considering that Amazon has cut Google out of the loop considerably with its Kindle Fire line, but today is the first time we've received confirmation that Amazon has indeed licensed Nokia's Location Platform. Those residing on foreign shores hoping to experience a piece of England without buying an expensive plane ticket can do so with new high-resolution images courtesy of Google Maps. Google has added a couple of new features to Maps, including the ability to use Street View on Downing Street. Users can now peruse the outside of number ten, the famous residence of the country’s prime ministers, and Google has also started to roll out new high resolution map images for various countries across the world. Google Maps adds panoramic images from Antarctica to Street View

Google Maps just added a whole bunch of 360-degree panoramic images to Street View of some great spots in Antarctica, both inside and out. Among those great spots include places like the South Pole Telescope, Shakleton’s hut, Scott’s hut, Cape Royde Adélie Penguin Rookery and the Ceremonial South Pole. Google Maps had partnered with the Polar Geospatial Center at the University of Minnesota and the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust to make it all happen. Read The Full Story

Google has today announced the Endangered Language Project, which aims to save languages that are on the verge of extinction. Google says that there are over 3,000 languages that need saving, and feels it’s important to document them to preserve cultural diversity while “honoring the knowledge of our elders and empowering our youth.” The project aims to give those interested in preserving the languages a place to store the necessary information. Google Maps adds UK waterways as routes

Google is constantly updating the routes and maps that uses for Google Maps used by millions of people around the world to where they want to go each day. Google has teamed up with Canal and River Trust, which is the charity that will be in charge of all the UK water network starting next month.
