Google Maps for iOS may not be due to hit the iPhone 5 and other iOS 6 devices until the end of the year, but Apple fans will reportedly be able to use Street View on their devices far sooner. While Google's work on an iOS 6-compatible native version of the mapping app isn't expected to be ready for release until later in 2012, a browser based Street View for Apple's gadgets is roughly two weeks away, the NYT reports.

We've made it through hump day, which means only two more work days to go before the weekend arrives again. Yesterday, we found out about a hack that was resetting Samsung Galaxy S IIIs to their factory settings. Samsung said that the security hole had since been fixed, but today we heard that the remote hack isn't limited to just Samsung devices. The iPhone 5 might be heading to China soon, and we heard that Apple's new Lightning connector isn't identical on both sides. Google maps is rumored to be hitting iOS 6 by the end of the year, which goes hand-in-hand with new report that claims Apple ditched Google Maps because it doesn't offer turn-by-turn navigation.

After iOS users found out that the new Apple Maps pretty much sucked, they were left wondering why Apple ditched Google Maps in the first place. Google Maps iOS app rumored to arrive by the end of the year
Yesterday, Google chairman Eric Schmidt said that the company has yet to start work on a Google Maps app for iOS. It certainly bummed a lot of iPhone and iPad users out since it would now be a while before they could be saved from the Apple Maps fiasco. Google Street View goes diving with underwater panoramas
Google Maps has extended Street View into even more unusual places, adding underwater panoramic images courtesy of a collaboration with The Catlin Seaview Survey. The new under the sea shots include not only incredible marine topology, such as the Great Barrier Reef and Apo Island, but a wealth of sealife too (none of which has been blurred out for privacy, unlike hapless humans who accidentally get caught in Google's more pedestrian Street View system).

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 25, 2012
We've had a rather interesting Tuesday here at SlashGear, thanks in no small part to RIM. The company held its BlackBerry Jam today, introducing us to new BlackBerry 10 features like Peek and Flow. We also learned that BlackBerry 10 will come with support for your favorite social networks, even offering a native Facebook app. Carrier testing on the new mobile OS will begin next month, and RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said that BlackBerry has a good shot at becoming number three behind Android and iOS.

Google Maps for iOS 6 on ice until Apple invitation says Schmidt
Google is yet to prepare a version of Google Maps for iOS 6, with chairman Eric Schmidt saying it was up to Apple whether the iPhone 5 and other devices would get a new version of the mapping app. Speaking in Japan, Schmidt said that Google would "welcome" Apple's cooperation but said that "we have not done anything yet" to prepare a new version, Bloomberg reports. Google Maps' disappearance from iOS, replaced by Apple's homegrown alternative, was fueled by the Cupertino company's desire to further distance itself from reliance on Google services, insiders claims, rather than out of any specific issues with the app itself.

The iPhone 5 crowd could help Apple Maps find its way
Every Apple launch has a sting in the tail, and for iPhone 5 and iOS 6 it’s Maps. Ditching Google Maps and instead turning to a self-made alternative makes sense in terms of longevity, but it meant hitting reset on what had come to be relied upon as a solid and predictable user experience. Apple was going to have to take a PR hit at some point, there was no escaping it. The step back in detail from Google Maps, which has had years of refinement, to the first-gen Maps app of iOS 6, is unavoidably obvious, particularly to those outside of US cities.

iOS 6 hack restores Google Maps
Canny developers have coaxed Google Maps into running on iOS 6 devices, bypassing the little-loved Apple Maps app, though the hack is said to be not yet ready for primetime. Apple replaced Google Maps on the iPhone 5 and other devices running iOS 6 with its own, homegrown Maps app, and promptly encountered criticism over the quality of the service's location data. Now, iOS jailbreak developer Ryan Petrich has apparently managed to get the old Google Maps back on his iOS 6 phone.

Nokia takes a shot at poorly-received Apple Maps app
Today, Apple's new Maps app in iOS 6 has been the subject of a lot of criticism. Some iOS 6 users aren't exactly satisfied with Apple's attempt at entering the navigation space, and Nokia has jumped on the opportunity to talk about its own suite of navigation tools offered to its users. Apple Maps hack adds Google public transport directions option
Devious developers have already cooked up a way to bake Google Maps mass transit directions into Apple's iOS 6 Maps app, though the workaround isn't quite ready for primetime yet. Google Transit for iOS 6 is the handiwork of Simon Maddox, adding a Google Directions option to the list of third-party plugins Apple offers for alternative routing, and pulling up results in Safari.
