Hot on the heels of their flash-memory PMP announcement, Sony have also come out with the news that they’re planning a Video Walkman to compete with, you guessed it, Apple’s ever-so-successful video-capable iPod.

“We are developing a product that handles images, but I cannot make any comment on specific plans” Sony Senior Vice President Hiroshi Yoshioka

Sony HMP A1

Also without any sort of evidence behind it was Yoshioka’s claim that he would double Sony’s 10% share of the lucrative portable media market.  Without wishing to sound like Mister Negative from Negative Land, but Sony are really going to have to put their money where their corporate mouth-piece is if they want people to take this latest foray seriously.

Edit: the picture above shows Sony’s HMP-A1 PMP, released in 2004, and not whichever video device the company is talking about currently.

This looks very nice IMO (altho looks a little like the back sony’s own digi camaras), its much better looking than Zune, which looks very plain (and makes me think of Steve Ballmer)

Ironically, loser5121, the picture is of a video PMP that Sony was selling back in 2004 called the HMP-A1. It had a 20gb hard drive and 3.8″ screen, and cost around $680 (though I’m not sure if it was officially available outside of Japan).

It’ll be interesting to compare how evolved their design for the new video Walkman is from the A1!
