Small-time messaging app Tiiny has been shuttered

Late last year, Tiiny was revealed as another ephemeral messaging app in a crowded space. The app was always billed as a project more than a moonshot or labor of love, which makes today's announcement neither disappointing or sad. In a blog post via Medium, Digg founder Kevin Rose announced he and the team at North were shutting Tiiny down, saying "at the end of the day Tiiny didn't find an audience, and the product wasn't a big enough improvement over similar services in an already insanely crowded space."

At the time of launch (September 2014), Tiiny showed a bit of promise. Sharing was its goal, and it did that exceedingly well. At the time, I described it as "a moving, real-time collage of what's going on with people you follow." Sadly, that's all it ever was.

Tiiny didn't find an audience, which means it didn't really receive any updates to improve on the experience or make it dynamic in any way. It was a neat concept, but ultimately a limited experience left most looking past Tiiny.

At launch, Rose was adamant that success wasn't really important for Tiiny — even forecasting the shutdown. The goal at North is pushing apps out rapidly; tossing pasta at the wall to see what sticks. Rose says North has some guidelines in place for what they'll build next, and says their other app, Watchville, is doing well.

Though Tiiny could have been huge, it wasn't. Rather than having their failure fed to them, Rose and North should probably be commended for stepping aside and yanking an app that was redundant.
