It looks like the rumor mill isn’t just pegging the iMacs for a complete overhaul, now Apple is rumored to be releasing an ultraportable 12-inch notebook.

Ultra thin Mac mock-up

Granted, this rumor has actually been around for a while, with some variants pointing towards a Tablet PC. The latest rumor pegs the laptop at measuring between 0.6 and 0.7 inches thick and weighing at less than 3 pounds. No word on whether or not it will include an optical drive. Though small notebooks like the R500 from Toshiba are able to include them.

Personally, I’m still inclined to believe that if Apple decides to release another line of notebooks it will be a tablet. Yes, ultraportables are great for mobility, and I’m sure that they would sell quite a few. But at the end of the day, it’s going to cut into the sales of their other notebooks. While Tablet PCs may cut into some of their other notebook sales, it will also attract users that have to look to Windows machines to satisfy their needs.
