Yet more PS3 news, a little less dramatic than earlier but perhaps more useful in the long run.  ITmedia +D Games and Game Watch have both covered upgrading the PS3’s internal hard-drive to 80gb and 100gb respectively, photo documenting what looks like a pretty easy (albeit potentially warranty-spoiling) procedure.  The drive cage is accessible via a panel on one side, and contains a 2.5-inch serial ATA model commonly found in notebooks, the Seagate Momentus 5400.2.  Check out the pictures (and a screen-shot of size evidence) after the cut.

The PS3 automatically asks that the new drive is formatted, after which the full capacity is available:

This won’t void the warranty, when you call tech support about ‘issues’ (in my case a crawling color line) the tech told me to take out the hard drive, I asked if that voids the warranty, he said no… so it’s all good as far as coverage.

Where can I find a hdd to replace my current ps3 20gig? Surely it needs to be a certain type, right? I would love to hear from some of you that have already changed the hard drives in your machines. Is there a way to transfer files or do you just lose them?

hey i was reading about upgradeing your ps3’s hdd and i’ve read that the largest size existing right now was 160 gb but while searching best buy online i found this
“Western Digital – 320GB Internal Hard Drive WD3200KSRTL
Serial ATA interface; SecureConnect connection; data transfer rate up to 300MB/sec; 16MB buffer” i’m not sure about the speed of it, but if it were to be the 5400rpm as the original ps3’s would it this hdd work?

yeh ps3 iz soo much better than da 360, it can play blu ray disc where as for miicrosoft, u need a 200 adapter to play da hd dvds in 1080p, plus ps3 has bluetooth and wifi, ps3 may not have has many game titles as da 360 but it has greater potential to develop better games in da future because of the advantage of the 6axis controller,

I’m a playstation fan obviously… and if you look at those new Xbox 360 elites they say we got huge memory expansions. to 120 Gigs. Well now for the ps3 we got those too. And were like what? 4-5 months in unlike them where they are almost 2 years in? I think thier a joke.

It’s 120 GB, technically 111 GB, cause of the formatting

but it’s at a great price for what it’s worth

    check it out

I’m probably gonna upgrade mine with it

Team Xecutor has a neato little dongle that allows you to connect 3.5 inch drives to the PS3. Its 26 dollars, and allows you to expand up to a 1 TB hard drive.

the only reason people are buying the wii is that it is cheap!! it’s not that innovative, with shit games, just because you can wave you’re arms about like a idiot playing a game with no quality, shit graphics and poor depth and content, (FACT!), does not make a system good, it’s for stupid simple minded people with no brain, who can’t figure out how to use a light switch, the xbox 360 it is a good system and i might might buy one if i c it in a jumble sale in some pub car park, it has good games but really offers poor value for money considering how much they charge for add-ons to bring it up to their full spec even then it does not come near the ps3, the xbox 360 elite just has a larger hard drive with a few hardware adjustments, it still is not touch on the ps3, the PS3 has wireless internet, via wi-fi, wireless bluetooth pad’s, blu-ray player(£1000+), and hidden hardware thast will be unlocked via software updates, and despite what some idiots think, it has some excellent games,(RFOM is better than HALO 3), everyone keeps moaning about the price but it is only £400 in th uk and $500 in the us, do you really think that is exspensive considering the features that are available to you now and in the future? (NO!), stop complaining about the costa and just save up a bit more or get a better paid job and stop bad mouthing the best console(PS3).

ps. to all the lazy layabouts in this country get a job!! and to al;l those other xbox 360 idiots if you get paid on friday and are broke on monday then even a 10p pack of tangy toms! will seem exspensive, like it or F*** **F!

  21. Open Minded Gamer September 2, 2007

Here’s my scoop on the whole console war. I traded in my PS2 for a Wii because I eventually just stopped playing games on it and used it for a DVD player. The Wii was fun, and has some excellent games that really show how the motion control capabilities make up for last-gen graphics. I ended up getting my hands on a large sum of money (don’t ask), and I went and bought myself a PS3, just because it was supposed to be the best. A couple months down the line one, of my friends ended up needing some money really bad and sold me his Xbox 360 for dirt cheap. I now find myself with my hands on all three next-gen consoles, which are all hooked up to a Samsung LN-S5797D, a 57″ 1080p capable LCD screen. After having extensively played all three systems, I found a few things out. The Wii is just as much fun to play as the others. While they rely on graphics to pull you in, the Wii immerses you in the game-play with its fluid controls. The graphics on the PS3 really stand out, but after having played the huge library of games that I have acquired for all three games, there are more than a few 360 games that put PS3 graphics to shame (Gears of War and Halo 3 Beta for instance). Also, I’d like to point out that more than a few developers are complaining about the Cell processor, and how hard it is to program games for. I’d also like to point out that Sony is placing the entire future of the PS3 on the success of the Blue-ray disks. As I can recall, Sony has done this before and ended up bombing out multiple times (Beta tapes and Audio CD’s anyone?) While the disk storage space does allow for very impressive levels of data to be implemented in games, they would have been smart to use regular DVD’s and wait to see which format, Blue-Ray or HD-DVD, will be the better product. Being more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better, as beta tapes proved. The Xbox 360 does seem to have the most hardware problems of the group, but mine has yet to encounter any roadblocks, along with many of my friend’s systems. The 360 definitely has the advantage of Xbox Live and a huge library of games, both of which have been unmatched by Sony and Nintendo alike, and they haven’t decided to throw their full support behind one of the two competing next-gen disk formats, although they do have a HD-DVD add-on peripheral. Now I know, Sony is introducing Home soon, and yes, it does look promising, but as of yet it is unproven, and the problem still arises of cost. Yes, I know, to all of you ready to flame me with talk of PS3 online being free, but think of this. PS2’s online was “free”, but the developers were free to charge monthly rates and such ON EVERY GAME that they felt it was necessary to do so. Xbox Live charges one flat monthly fee that applies no matter how many games you play online, no extra costs. I can definitely see the developers deciding to charge gamers independently of Sony, as many of them have reported publicly that the rising costs of developing games is becoming too much to handle. As such, here is my review in a nutshell. All three companies have focused on what they do best. Sony has delivered cutting-edge hardware. Nintendo has focused on what they do best, making fun games, and Microsoft has created an all-around system that has proven itself with an excellent online component that will be tough to beat. I am in no way a fan-boy of any of the three companies, and as such I will not say which system I feel is the better choice for gamers. This is only an honest opinion and information on all three that I have acquired during the years as I looked forward to, bought and played each of the three consoles. And I completely agree with SteveoXP’s comments. Pawanjit/ FLUBBA, you are obviously a Sony fan boy, and there is nothing wrong with that. You personally like the PS3 experience more, and you are entitled to your opinion. But you do not need to post online like some f***ing idiot and call down everyone who does not share your view of the gaming world. You are the only one who is being ( and I quote you here) “stupid simple minded … with no brain.” You are correct in that hardware wise, The PS3 does beat out the 360, but as I said, games make the system, not the hardware.

I am going to quote you again by posting this:

“everyone keeps moaning about the price but it is only £400 in th uk and $500 in the us, do you really think that is exspensive considering the features that are available to you now and in the future? (NO!), stop complaining about the costa and just save up a bit more or get a better paid job and stop bad mouthing the best console(PS3).

You, my friend, are definitely the most stupid, simple-minded and ego-antagonistic person I have ever had the displeasure of conversing with. I am a 19 year old who just happened to come across a great job that pays well. If it wasn’t for the excess of money that I make, I wouldn’t have the systems, games or the TV. Many people who raise kids, are going to school and in other word don’t have mommy and daddy paying for their every whim and desire, will not be able to afford the PS3. Until you grow up and realize that living on your own in the world costs a hell of a lot more than you think it does, do us all a favor and never post online again. It will make the world a much better place, and it’ll save parents from having their kids come across and learn from one of the worst examples of human intelligence I have ever seen.

This has been my honest opinion and “review-of-sorts” on all three systems. If you have any comments about them, email me at ITS_THE_NEW_GUY@hotmail.com. I’ll be happy to answer any questions, or address any concerns you have.
    Good day everyone.

p.s. Pawanjit/ FLUBBA, I really hope you can grow-up a bit, so that, god-forbid, if you ever have kids, they never turn out to be racist, egotistical maniacs. The world has enough of those.

Hi evry1, i have read evry1’s messages and have come to a conclusion that you all have a biased view upon gaming (exept open minded gamer). I would just like to say that i think that evry1 that argues the xbox 360 vs PS3 debate should lay down their swords and take their time to actually look at the xbox 360 and the PS3 they are both amazing pieces of technology that have both great games. I know the PS3 doesn’t have enough games (there is 380 games next year coming out) and that the xbox 360’s online gaming isn’t free but there is good and bad in both consoles, just try to look at the bright side of the consoles. I own a PS3 and my friends have all got xbox 360’s and i think they are both gr8. Thanx *BAIRDYBOY* =)

any suggestions on what linux distro to put on it?

He is not an idiot … at least i think he is not .. I think that you missed something, Sony did not invent DVD, it just take part in it development later in the project… Hitachi, Toshiba and Matsushita does initiate DVD… ! Sony AND philips juste join the group when their own common project of High density CD was dead. About CD, Philips invent it … not Sony as a lot of people think.

Searched the internet for reviews on your question to upgrade my 60GB Ps3 last week. Can’t remember the site that did Hdd comparsons or what drives were used, but basically though the diference in speed between 5400rpm & 7200rpm were were not enough.. (were are talking about seconds and fractions of seconds) ..to justify spending more on a faster spinning hdd. Also interestingly the 7200 rpm drive didn’t create a heat problem for the PS3 as expected.

So just buy the largest capacity 2.5″ 5400rpm sata hdd you can afford and your PS3 will love you for it!

hi i own both 360 and ps3 and here is my honest opion

    step father owns a wii

    xbox 360 firstly

poorly made broke alot of time due to red ring on me and very poor support altho they have alot of games atm they had more time to produce em them sony atm but in my personal opion they should have put more in to the reliablity after all who wants a console that is no good for long gaming ? i also played xbox live and psn and tbh i dont see much different except rankings and tbh i dont wanna pay for a lil xml of ranking do you? online play on cod 4 is same as for grfx atm it do come just short of ps3 in areas but blows up trying i think ps3 need to peak before ppl judge and compare

    wii

good system all around fun to play with a party of mates around cant fault it cheap and fun to play makes a good second system for ppl with extra cash

    ps3

personally blu ray i like after hearing 50 g storage will be utilized in newer games that xb360 wont be able to handle without hdd addons which will cost 100$ the system its self i find very realiable and silent never over heated on me xbox overheated 6 times and there is same area which is venterlated as for choice of games on system there is alot tbh i have 20+ games atm and i know i can play them without random freezes and overheating worries bad points i found in this system are the hdd does seem a lil small for games that install 1 g to system b4 play only some top games do this ie assassins creed and mainly this biggest downside to system is the casing is very shiny and scratches and fingerprints up very easy but it makes up for this in its silent play and the fact i can watch you tube on ps3 is a bonus also alot of microsoft stuff works on ps3 i know lol any think usb will plug and play inc web cams mics portable hdd’s and pc steering wheels and surround sound which to me was a bonus

finally im sorry for spellin mistakes and shortened words and im not a fanboy of any console i paid for both 360 and ps3 and i found ps3 came off better cos i aint replaced it 6 times like i had to xbox so in my personal opion for gfx realiablity and future gaming go ps3 xbox wont last long for hardcore gamers

Just wait until those fiesty japanese figure out how to piggyback the PS3 RAM!!!!

Oh wait, I heard a rumour they had already managed it…. can’t provide link i am afraid as this is what i heard by word of mouth in workplace – an IT office.

So what is “piggyback”ing to non-tech people:

You get one stick of RAM, glue it to another stick of RAM (!!!!thats a play on words… DO NOT try this at home, nowhere in the process is any form of glue actually used!!!!) and hey presto, you have doubled the RAM size on the same RAM slot, and lost zero of latency.

As for some of the HDD questions about capacity: Fujitsu now sell a 350GB 2.5 SATA…. :-). nah, that ain’t enough… :-D

it is a give an take and you are simply able to choose for yourself, but lets not forget.
The 360 came out first and because i anticipate anything new i had to have it.
this explains why a lot of people haven’t gotten the PS3 or will be soon.
secondly the rings of death have happened to ALMOST everyone i have ever talked to or played with online, sucks big time and XBOX needs to fix its ***t. and putting it out with aonly a starting HDD of 20 gig was a slap in the face and a joke.
but as far as upgrading your PS3 and 360 to a bigger hardrive, your an idiot.
if you haven’t figured out yet that the greatest thing about both of these systems is it can network everything you have.
It seems like most of you are computer sauvvy so you understan the power of a real computer, and I mean one that is screemin fast and the storage capacity, then you should realize if you aren’t raiding a computer with lots of storage your an idiot.
who wants to get some music and pictures on te PS3 and then go to the 360 and get other stuff and movies and then to your computer or PSP ad get other stuff.
make it central and accessable from all and you can’t go wrong.
Now the next issue is online gaming.
come on it takes an hour to link up to your friends on COD4 because you don’t get in game messages or alerts of who is on ad what they are doing until you exit a game.
and lets not talk about the headsets and how crappy it is to communicate with your friends.
some people deal with it bu t for me multiplayer is all about friends and talking as a team in these games. So it sucks don’t deny it.
If Sony fixes it they will be untouchable. lets not forget that eventually the games for the PS3 will be in 1080p, yet even further untouchable.
but as for ease of use for online play XBOX has been doing it for too long to be stopped.
this being said for the price of the Blu0ray player alone you should have one.
but to get rid of your 360 also and only play on the Sony not until they work out some minor issues they have first.
now let’s be reasonable some games are better for the 360 and som for the PS3 because they are not in 1080p yet, this will change gaming for our gen.
but if we are rational and enjoy the technology and what we can do with it.
Microsoft has always been screwin us and will continue, but sony needs to get on the ball ad work out some minor issues with their system.
why have a great console and then let some minor networking and menu and communiction issues stop you from shwoing everyone how amazing the IBM processor is what it can do.
COD 4 is cleaner on a PS3 but i can;t talk to my friends so good through the headset nd i can’t always join em easily.
these are the issues and this is the future.

More than 200GB in s PS3 is overkill. Get a good 200GB 7200 rpm HD with 16MB cache – This will also help negate some of the crappy load times (Raw -vs- Smackdown 2008, etc).

Betamax and MiniDisc were not quite the failures everyone makes them out to be. Commercially, yeah, they’re failures, but Betamax outlasted VHS in the long run.
BS, you say? Betamax is still used by at least 95% of all TV stations, especially for commercial production, though they’re moving to high definition now. Minidisc is also still widely used in media companies. Both are good formats, just not commercially successful.

Sony learned from past mistakes and successes. Though they’ve made new mistakes, they’ve also repeated success. They used their model for establishing DVD with Blu-Ray disc and quite easily defeated Toshiba in the format war. Less than 2 years? Wow. And that was with Paramount going HD DVD exclusive.

But, you can’t argue with the numbers. 10 million+ to 1 million was too wide of an early gap for HD DVD to compete.

JJJ To answer your question. You just need any 2.5 SATA drive 1.5Gb. You could spend more money and buy a 3.0Gb but its not worth it. The ps3 wont allow it to run at full speed. I would also make sure its a 5400 RPM as its also not worth the extra money. 8Mb cache is also fine, even though 16Mb cache would be better. It also really does not matter with brand. Any brand with a special would do just fine. Check out newegg.com or hell, even Ebay. I bought my 250Gb Raptor from there to replace my 60Gb in my ps3. Also I would call your cable company and see if they offer cable internet as its by far the fastest affordable form to go. DSL will most likely not give you the broadband speed cable can. And cheap 20 to 40 dollar WIFI router will also work. As for RLMCman, The type and size of H.D.D has nothing to do with backwards compatibility. Its all due with the Emoticon engine or whatever its called. Only the 60Gb was made to be 100% compatible. Even the 80Gb is not 100%. I found mine used at Hastings for 50 dollars cheaper than the 40Gb, and works perfectly fine. Hopefully I cleared up some confusion and answered some questions.

  68. Paul Overton March 31, 2008

just to clarify a few things.
1: Betamax – yeah it lost commercially, fair play.
2: Audio CD was a joint venture between Sony and Phillips and to my knowledge wasn’t a flop (Open Minded Gamer??).
3: DVD was developed by Toshiba (originally super density disc). Sony and Phillips were developng a competing Multimedia compact disc but left the race early (learnt the lesson from VHS?)
4: Looks like Blu-ray has won the format war.
5: WII isn’t innovative? Wasn’t it the first console with movement sensitive controllers? I’d say that was pretty innovative (See 9).
6: To utilise the Cell processor is very different to the way you program for the XBox 360 or a standard PC. The completely different archtecture means new compilers and software techniques need to be developed. In turn the first games aren’t making the most of it, but give it a year or so and graphics wise the XBox 360 will have trouble keeping up.
7: All the consoles have their ups and downs, just pick the one that suits you!
8: If you want to upgrade the hard drive go ahead. Remember that the faster/larger they arethe more heat they’re likely to generate. Stick with middle of the range (120 or 160GB), will probaly be more reliabe as they’ve been around for longer and bugs/issues will have been ironed out.
    9: Pawanjit/ FLUBBA – what a T**t
    10: Enjoy the PS3!

For what it’s worth, it’s a 320GB Seagate Momentus drive, and it’s recognized fine and dandy by the PS3…but it’s useless if I can’t restore my old data to it!

I jumped at the PS3 only after I did my research and found out all the extra goodies that completely blow away the competition (that’s you X-box 360). It seems to me that Sony did themselves a huge favor by waiting to bring out the PS3 because it was able to launch it with the new and extremely powerful Blu-Ray technology which greatly increases the quality of the games played on this system as well as the huge upgrade in video quality of the movies being shopped for the new technology. As we all know the DVD format wars was won by none other than Blu-Ray(ha ha ha you suck Microsoft). I mean the X-Box 360 will soon offer a Blu-Ray attachment for their system, sounds to me like Microsoft knew blu-ray was gonna win and still went with HD so as to make blu-ray available later for a price, hmmmm? The fact that PS3 is backwards compatible made it so much more attractive to me since I only bought the original XBOX so now i get to enjoy all those wonderful PS2 titles that have eluded me(damn Microsoft got it so wrong!) There is just so much being offered for the PS3; the free internet availability via wi-fi, blue tooth, backwards compatibility, a huge library of all the games in the Sony Playstation Universe, granted, PS3 doesnt have the large library that X-Box 360 have at the moment but (and this is a BIG BUT) the lifespan of this particular machine and all its future updates will prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the Playstation 3 is the better system and has an extremely brighter future in games, videos, and upgrades. I mean really who hasnt thought of dusting off their Final Fantasy VII and rocking that joint all over again!!! The Sixaxis controller is ok and the addition of the Dual Shock 3 is pretty cool but nothing compares to titles like Resistance, Call of Duty 4, MGS 4, DMC 4, Assassin’s Creed, VF 5, can Sony get better???? Hell Yeah!!! Titles like Resistance 2, MAG, Little Big Planet, RE5 will show just how powerful this system is and how young it still is and just the kind of future it holds for itself and all of us hardcore gamers and gamers in general. I’m looking forward to a long and enjoyable experience with my beloved PS3.

I’ve got the 80GB PS3, Ive got only about 500mb left on it with the installs of games, downloaded games, DLC for RockBand, and more. I’ve researched and researched and found that the PS3 is not limited to a HDD Size. Heat is an issue, so please don’t just jump at any “sale drive.” The drive speed is not an issue, however the cache of the drive IS an issue.

With all that in mind I commenced upon my research, waiting over a year to finally make my decision. I went with a HITACHI Travelstar 7K320 HTS723232L9A360. The drive has a 16mb cache and an average seek time of 12ms, and average latency of 4.2ms.

Upon arrival of my new HDD, I opened up my PS3 and went to work. removed the old one, set it aside and put in the new one. Plugged my ps3 back in and turned it on (Yes I had already done a back up of the things I wanted to keep). The PS3 gave me a error message that it could not read the drive. Ok, I unplugged the PS3 again removed the drive seeing that all the connections were clean and solid I replaced the drive. Plugged in and powered up, the PS3 saw the drive gave me the report about the drive, and went about to format the drive. About an hour and a half later the format was done, and I started replacing my back ups.

Now with the drive in my PS3 for a few months here is what I have noted from the previous stock drive to the new one. Seek and access times have been cut in half. While playing RockBand either local or online for me loading from one song to the next is about half the time it used to take. My ps3 stays cooler as well since the power consumption was cut down as well. Playback of DVD’s, Blu-Ray’s, Music CD’s, or streamed video appears to be a bit smoother but I think that was more of a heat problem then anything with the media save for the BD live stuff.

The installing of games such as SoCom U.S. Navy Seals went a bit faster with the new drive versus the old drive. The old drive has been wiped put in an enclosure and I run Ubuntu linux off of it for my laptop.

All in all the whole process was easy, and I would rate it as a 2 on required tech level (out of 5). The only reason I gave it a 2 instead of a 1 is that some times you may encounter having to remove and re seat the new drive to get the PS3 to allow you to format it. Which would cause those whom are not as tech savvy to think that there is a problem with the drive or the system, when all it is, is that the drive is not fully seated.

Yeah I know that 320Gb is pretty much OVER KILL for the PS3, but ya know what at the price of $99.00 plus shipping to Alaska it was well worth the money.

    To DANNY SANTIAGO:

Buddy it is people like you that give the PS3 a bad rep, becasue after all of your research, your still an idiot.
i am not a fan boy of either becasue i have the money to afford both and therefore enjoy both.
FACT: the Sony network is junk now that more people have PS3’s then every before, the lag is ridiculous, and i have a fios business line.
not to mention no one here probably has even touched their router to allow for the protocols they are playing on—translation, NATS UP everywhere, if you don;t know what a NAT is then you are a cheater.
ever wonder when your online playing and you know your not that good, but you keep killing people and they can’t kill you no matter how exact they are on a headshot?
it’s becasue your a NAT BOY cheater.
the PS3 can’t watch videos online through the browser becasue you can’t download a web browser directly on it.
the Xbox doens;t have a Web browser but does allow for netflix, which means microsoft yet again was in the loop on what we want to do with our system.
FACT: you cannot download another OS on the XBOX, this sucks and is because Microsoft doesn’t want you using another OS.
hence the PS3 knows whats up to allow for LINUX which you can then download a browser on and watch hulu on to watch tv…NICE…

BOTTOM line both systems graphics are equal with the PS3 a littel ahead, but the network and communication of sony is years behind microsoft, the networking people.
microsoft sucks becasue it makes everything proprietary and won;t allow for other OS’s on the system, but the new interface is nice, and the HOME on the PS3 is still only THE SIMS!
the blu-ray player is the best on the market and props to sony for seeig this and realizing it and screw microsoft for not being in the loop.

BUT to comment on the reason behind this BLOG>>>>>>if your upgrading your HDD on the PS3 then your a moron.
save the money, buy a few terabytes and netowork everything so both systems can share all movies, music, and pictures on your network.
you have missed the mark drastically if you have some things on each system and different computers in your house.
    get with it.
setup a networked drive and share everything from one location to every screen in your house…..this is what the people who are using this technology are doing..this is what it is for.
I can download a digital copy to my networked drive on one of my computers and then serve it up to all three of my computers and my 56 inch samsung in the living room with my XBOX360 attached to it, or in my bedroom with my 46 inch samsung with my PS3 attached to it.
get with it, get a clue, your like two years ago with what you are doing here.
Not to mention i can rip a bluray to my network with linux commands and erver to my house network…..so WTF are you doing?
seriously, can you lsiten to or wathc everything you own on any screen in your house? well then rethink it and get with it!
both systems are good for totally different things. don’t be cheap buy them both.
