Orange is the New Black season 5 stolen by hackers, leaked online

The upcoming fifth season of the show Orange is the New Black isn't due to premiere on Netflix until June 9th, but most of the episodes have already been leaked online. A hacker by the name of "TheDarkOverlord" has taken responsibility for the leak, claiming to have stolen the episodes from a third-party production vendor. The first episode appeared online early Saturday, with the following nine released to torrent sites shortly after when ransom demands failed to be met.

The hacker says they were able to steal the first ten episodes of Orange is the New Black's season five earlier this year, before the source had gotten its hands on episodes 11 through 13. Netflix gave a statement to Variety confirming the theft, noting that it was "aware of the situation. A production vendor used by several major TV studios had its security compromised and the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved."

A statement from the hacker says that they released episodes two through ten after Netflix failed to respond to their threats, with the first episode leaked as a warning. They go on to claim to have stolen shows from networks including ABC, Fox, National Geographic, and IFC, with similar threats to leak them online.

"We figured a pragmatic business such as yourselves would see and understand the benefits of cooperating with a reasonable and merciful entity like ourselves. And to the others: there's still time to save yourselves. Our offer(s) are still on the table – for now," TheDarkOverlord wrote.
