Here’s a newsflash for you. Apparently Microsoft isn’t working on a Blu-ray player for the Xbox 360. I know this might be a bit of a shock to some of you, but apparently they really just don’t care about the format.

No Blu-ray

I know that this might seem a bit redundant, but rumors keep popping up fairly often that someone is manufacturing such a device for the 360. Honestly, until there’s an official announcement, I hardly pay any attention to such rumors, and you would probably be well to do the same. Here’s the latest official word from Microsoft on the matter.

As we have stated, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360. Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available.

Why would Microsoft go to the trouble and introduce a product that would eat into their movie download service revenues? The average consumer will not notice any difference between the quality of Blu-ray Disc source material and an HD movie downloaded from XBOX Live. And those who would notice that difference aren’t going to watch their Blu-ray movies on an XBOX or PS3.
