Microsoft extending XP expiration date 2 years - only for budget PCs

The extension, at least for now, only applies to manufacturers of low cost computers such as those of Everex, Asus, Intel, and so on. That means that a year from now you’ll have to go buy an Eee PC in order to get your hands on one of the best OS’s ever.

There is even word that MS is customizing a version of XP to run on the XO laptop, the product of the OLPC project, because for some reason its 433Mhz Geode processor is too weak to run XP Home in its entirety. Sadly, for the rest of us, XP is still slated to cease being sold come June 2008.

Word is that although their goal is to phase out XP for even these machines by 2010, it could go as long as 2011 since they’ve vowed to keep XP an option for these machines for up to one year after their next OS is released, which will hopefully be more like the refined version of XP with the prettiness of Vista, whereas Vista seems to have thrown functionality to the wind. The new version of Windows that they are working on is currently known as Windows 7 and is slated for a 2010 launch.
