Freewheel's WiFi-only smartphone plan goes nationwide

WiFi calling isn't new, but services that offer it as your only means of communication are quickly on the rise. Freewheel, a WiFi-only service we told you about previously, is now going nationwide, and will turn your phone into a WiFi calling monster. Rather than choose to make a WiFi call, it's your only option, and might just be cheaper than your existing plan. For as little as $9.95/month, you can snag a plan, which is available on the Moto G, sold via Freewheel.

That $9.95 per month spend is available for existing Cablevision customers. If you're not a customer already, you'll have to dole out $29.95 each month for the WiFi calling plan.

The service also only works with a Moto G, which you'll need to snap up via Freewheel (for $99.95). If you're a fan of over-the-top feature phones, WiFi-only calling via a Moto G might not be for you.

Kristin Dolan, chief operating officer of Cablevision, said "Cellular was built for voice and WiFi was built for data, which is why WiFi is the preferred choice for data usage today. Freewheel integrates a high quality device backed by the strength of our professionally maintained carrier-grade WiFi network. As the thirst for data continues to grow, Freewheel provides consumers with a better, faster data experience, all at a fraction of the cost of cellular."

Still, WiFi calling exists via apps like Skype, and other WiFi calling plans — like those via Republic Wireless — offer a bit more flexibility with devices. If you're a Cablevision customer, $9.95/month is nothing to sneer at, especially if you've got a preteen itching for a phone of their own. Freewheel's service could also be a replacement for your existing landline phone plan.
