It wasn’t too long ago that Toshiba announced the first HD DVD burner for notebooks. It’s only natural that if a drive is small enough to fit in a notebook, it’s going to make its way into an external enclosure.

The new external HD DVD burner was shown off at this year’s IFA show. It is plenty small enough for anyone, with measurements of 126 x 126 13mm and a weight of only 165g. The great thing is that it can draw all the power it needs from a single USB port. No need to lug around a dedicated power cord.

Unfortunately Toshiba didn’t mention any of the good stuff like pricing or availability of the drive. I’m sure they’ll be making an announcement soon.

Is it as big as it looks? It seems almost as big as a DVD player.

No, it’s about the size of any slim DVD burner. It’s 126mm wide which is just a hair under 5 inches.
