Mr. Veneziani from CrunchGear was invited to a Bose event the other day, and while there he got a first hand experience with the Bose MusicMonitor speakers. The setup included the speakers, a small desk, and a brand new iMac and a subwoofer.

They played for the gentleman, six different songs from a range of sources, to drive home the point that Bose’s goal was lifelike sound. After playing through half of those songs, they unplugged the subwoofer, and told him that it was just a decoy, all the bass sounds he heard were coming solely from the two speakers on the desktop.

He said they sound amazing, so much so that they are apparently worth the $399 that Bose is charging, and that’s impressive coming from a guy who is generally a critic of Bose equipment. They will be available on October 4th; another thing worth mentioning is that according to the president of Bose, these are the best product Bose has ever made, Mr. Veneziani likened them to the iPhone of Bose’s product line.

Hm, makes me curious. I’m not a fan of Bose either, but this sounds promising. Allthough, for $400,- one can buy a stereo receiver and two floorstanders…

I heard these over in Japan, as they are already out over there. The US version is slightly modified.

It sounds incredible and sounds on par with at least some decent bookshelfs.

Bass is clean and natural, mid-range is typical bose, and treble is there but slightly muted in the upper register.

I heard these speakers the other day, and I have to say I was impressed. They sounded great on the couple of tracks I picked out of my iPod which the bose guy let me hook into them. Their small, sturdy design makes them perfect for me durring my travels with my macbook. The bass was very impressive for such small speakers… now that said, I doubt that they’d impress gamers or rumble any explosions from a DVD… but for a system that you dont need to lug around a cumbersome bass unit they’re great. At $399 they’re a bit pricy, but their solid design and surprising performace from such a small set impressed me, and I’m definately gonna save up for them.
