Worth Reading?

NoYes

Barnes and Noble’s nook fact sheet [pdf link] has revealed upcoming Android and Windows Mobile versions of their ebook reader software, though the software is not yet available to download either from the publisher’s download page or the Android Market.  The document suggests that the apps will support B&N’s last-page-read sync, and be available for free.

Of course, that raises the question of why Barnes and Noble haven’t enabled lending support for their Android client, as is possible on the iPhone, select BlackBerry and Motorola handsets, and a few other clients, when the nook itself is Android based.  Check out our launch day coverage of the nook here.

One Response to “Barnes and Noble prepping Android & WinMo ebook apps”

That’s awesome. I can’t wait to check out WinMo. I am so glad B&N is using EPUB, and eReader as the format as they are open standards rather than a more enclosed system for its eBook universe.

After all, the reason I hesitate to get a Kindle is due to the closed eco-system of Amazon’s Kindle, which makes Amazon the gatekeeper in that case. Hum, maybe you can buy a eBook from someone else and read it on BN’s Nook?

The irony is that Amazon does have an awesome MP3 store that is DRM-free with a large selection and often good prices. Yet that is a completely open format, which is preferrable.

Also, when will we see an eBook based on OLED screen? That would be beyond cool. Wikipedia has some pretty good info on OLED.
