ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 breaks teraflop performance barrier

This means that this single graphics card is more powerful than the Cray-1. ATI and AMD both seem to have problems playing catch-up with their competitors, but generally when they land one; it’s a good amount ahead of the curve of their competitors.

Technically it’s a double card, as the X2 denotes the fact that it has two GPU’s on board, but it only takes up one slot. For those of you beginning to wonder why anyone still runs ATI cards, this is why, because this card way over powers anything nVidia currently has and costs less than nVidia’s top end card with this card costing $449, well, that’s the MSRP, it’ll probably sell for less.

The card is DirectX 10.1 compatible, and will be able to work in CrossFire with ATI’s CrossFireX that is coming out sometime this quarter. It has 1GB of DDR3 on board, and if ATI adds this to the lineup of cards that can be used for high-end math calculations, building your own supercomputer will get a lot cheaper.
