YouTube Music is about to launch three personalized content playlists

Following hints about the offerings last month, YouTube has officially announced plans to launch three personalized playlists in YouTube Music, the company's music streaming service. These playlists will offer a mixture of new release content, music the user is likely to enjoy based on their listening habits, and a section that will help users find entirely new content that suits their tastes.

Plans to launch the three new personalized albums were announced by YouTube Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan during an interview at TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2019. During the session, Mohan revealed that YouTube Music will offer 'Your Mix,' 'Discover Mix,' and 'New Release Mix' later this month.

Each playlist is named after its intended purpose — the 'Your Mix,' for example, includes music the user already likes interspersed with new content the user is likely to enjoy. The recommendations are made based on the user's listening history, a method also used by Pandora and select other competitors.

The 'Discover Mix,' meanwhile, will present users with more obscure tracks from artists the user already listens to, as well as new artists the user hasn't previously listened to. The idea is to help users find new artists and songs to enjoy within the frame of reference of what they already like.

'New Release Mix,' meanwhile, is exactly what it sounds like — a selection of new releases that offers the latest content from artists the user already enjoys. In this way, the user can stay up-to-date on what's trending while sticking to the types of music they enjoy. Users will see the playlists arrive this month with weekly updates to keep the content fresh.
