XYZPrinting's da Vinci 1.0 AiO packs 3D printer and scanner

There is perhaps no more doubt in anyone's mind that 3D printing is here to stay. But while a multitude of companies and startups have made 3D printing a breeze, creating something to be 3D printed isn't yet equally so. Either you design your own object or you employ the use of a dedicated 3D scanner, which isn't exactly easy to come by, not to mention cheap. XYZPrinting, however, might now have the solution to that. Introducing the da Vinci 1.0 AiO, claimed to be the first combo unit available for consumers at a relatively affordable price.

In order to scan 3D objects, the same chamber and platform on which objects are printed is reused. The scanner uses asymmetric lasers to scan an object on the turn-table using a 0.5 mm resolution. XYZPrinting says that it only takes 5 minute to scan an item, which isn't much considering it can only fit small items inside. The scanned image is then saved in .stl file format, can be saved and shared, or immediately tweaked and sent to printing.

As to the printing half of the equation, the da Vinci 1.0 AiO uses fused filament fabrication (FFF) type and can accommodate printed objects inside its 7.8 x 7.8 x 7.8 inch chamber. It also carries with it features from XYZPrinting products such as nozzle cleaning, the smart filament cartridge, and, for the worrywarts, one year free warranty. da Vinci users can print from any source, from their own designs, scanned objects, and even the thousands of ready-made designs from the company's open source cloud database.

Given that it functions both as a printer and a scanner in one single package, it shouldn't be surprising to see the da Vinci 1.0 AiO with a higher price tag than equivalent printer-only units in the market. That said, for the features, the $799.99 might still be a sweet spot for some SMB's. The printer-scanner is now available from NewEgg and Amazon and will soon also arrive at Micro Center and Studica.
