MIUI 9 released today - Nougat for Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, too!

Today the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has begun getting an update to Android 7.0 Nougat. This is nearly the newest iteration of Android available, and has appeared in some countries in Europe, first. The update works with Xiaomi's own user interface MIUI 8.5 and has Android 7.0 Nougat at its base.

This update has appeared with a full filesize of 1.3GB – so unless you magically have access to this new feature, you're going to want to make some space. The Redmi Note 4 was first launched earlier this year with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This update, tipped by GizChina, will push the system to MIUI 8.5, making way for MIUI 9 later this year.

Xiaomi suggests that MIUI 9 will be sent out to users on August 11 (today) – but we'll see about that. One update precludes the other, and we're already here on the day of the supposed release. Have a peek at your device's Settings, then Info to see if a System Update is available.

This device first appeared late last year with a couple different names – Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 in Europe, and Redmi Note 4X in China. It would appear that all versions (regardless of name) will be getting the update soon. It all depends on carrier, of course – and whether each carrier wants to push the update as quickly as possible.

This update brings a plethora of new features to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, including a new multi-window view and the ability to quick-switch between apps with a double-tap of the task switcher button. This version of Android also brings more focus to Doze, the feature which saves the most battery life for Android users with a Low Power Usage mode when not in use.

It remains to be seen which features exactly this smartphone will be getting with Android 7.0 Nougat. Not least of all because Xiaomi's own MIUI 9 doesn't always reach the same conclusions as Google's home-grown Android. Stick around and see!
