Xiaomi Redmi 3s gets upgraded Snapdragon 430 SoC

Xiaomi has unveiled a new updated version of the Redmi 3 smartphone called the Redmi 3s. The two devices look very similar, but the new Redmi 3s has some very notable improvements over the standard Redmi 3, most notably an improved chipset and a fingerprint reader. The missing fingerprint reader was one of the things that was most lacking on the Redmi 3.

Other than gaining a fingerprint reader in the Redmi 3s, the smartphone also gets a better chipset in the form of a Snapdragon 430 SoC. That new chipset won't win any benchmark awards, but it is better than the Snapdragon that was in the original Redmi 3.The 3s does use the same 5-inch 720p resolution display and the same 139.3 x 69.6 x 8.5mm metal body. It also weighs the same 144 grams.

There appears to be no changes made to the camera with the 3s offering a 13MP rear camera using an f/2.0 aperture, LED flash, and phase detection auto focus. The front camera is a 5MP f/2.2 unit. Power is from a large 4100 mAh internal battery and the Redmi 3s supports LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS + GLONASS.

The Redmi 3s will come in a version offering 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage selling for 699 RMB, or about $106. An advanced version of the smartphone will sell for RMB 899 packing 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. That price equates to about $136. Redmi 3s buyers can choose from grey, silver, or gold colors and the device will be available starting June 16 in China. We first heard about a new version of the Redmi 3 with a fingerprint reader when it crossed TENAA in March. The TENAA listing at the time showed a version that lacked the fingerprint reader as well.
