Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S expected: One Massive Screen

An Android that succeeds the smartphone with the biggest screen and tiniest bezel seems to be here at last. It's called the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, and it does not have a notch in the center of its forehead. Its notch is on the side of its forehead, where all good notches go. This device is the next in a line of devices that have no qualms with covering the entirety of the front of their bodies with screens – without the need for curves or arrays of sensors.

The iPhone X has a real big screen-to-body ratio, and the Galaxy S8 has a screen that spills over its edges. The Xiaomi Mi Mix series has a display that takes up more of its frontside than any other phone on the market. In their first iteration, they kept the frontside camera – but put it at the base on the side – sort of like a rogue eyeball on the left cheek of a chin.

The front was – and remains here – unafraid of reaching for the corners. On the negative side, this makes the breaking of the actual display panel all the more likely if a display glass break happens. On the positive side, there's just SO much screen. SO MUCH.

Based on clues from recent leaks of other Xiaomi devices as well as early leaks of software files, we've got an OK idea of what the next device will look like and act like. This device will quite likely have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC inside as well as Android 8.0 Oreo. Storage will be provided by internal ROM only, and two versions will likely exist: 128 GB, 8 GB RAM or 64/128/256 GB, 6 GB RAM, just like Mi Mix 2.

The frontside camera looks like it'll appear in the upper right-hand corner of the display, creating the only "notch" area on the display. It's extremely tiny – barely larger than the camera lens itself, and it's likely the same shooter as the Mi Mix 2 – 5 MP, f/2.0, 1080p. Unless, of course, you believe that the white rendering is more accurate – which I do. The specs would remain the same, but the notch provides just a tiny bit more bezel to the lens.

The display is likely rolling with an 18:9 aspect ratio with FHD+(2160×1080) resolution. According to files provided to XDA, a Sony IMX363 is likely for the backside camera array. Two cameras once again – more powerful than the last time, and a whole lot more powerful than the time before that!

We're expecting a whole lot of "fun" features that some users consider essential – like a notification light (LED), IR blaster for changing channels on your TV, and a 3.5 mm to USB-C headphone adapter. That, of course, since there will be no headphone jack.

We're expecting this device to be shown for the first time in a few weeks. Pricing will likely ring in at approximately the same point as the Mi Mix 2. This version will likely run software not entirely unlike its predecessor as well – no big surprises there!
