Xbox topped game sales in January

NPD Group's January 2014 numbers are in, and with it Xbox has taken the bragging rights for most sold games in January across both the Xbox One and Xbox 360. A total of 2.27 million games were sold in January of this year, making up 47-percent of the market share and trumping the competing — and bestselling — PlayStation 4.

This works out to buyers in the United States averaging 2.7 games per console that has sold since launch. Among the top ten titles of console games, Xbox had bragging rights to five of them: Call of Duty: Ghosts for the Xbox One and 360, Battlefield 4, Minecraft, and Grand Theft Auto V.

Xbox's Corporate Vice President of Marketing, Strategy and Business, Yusuf Mehdi, said: "This amazing success is due in large part to our unrivaled games lineup, first class Xbox Live multiplayer games service and a platform for game developers that offers unique capabilities such as Kinect and Xbox SmartGlass ... We're just getting started."

In addition to the game sales, Microsoft says it has had over 740 million hours clocked across the Xbox One, including games, apps, and TV. More than 685 million speech commands have been used for navigating the Xbox One, with 20 million of them being "Xbox, Record That".
