Xbox One X gets a tempting PUBG deal

That PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is doing well on Xbox One isn't really much of a shock. The game has become one of the most successful PC games of all time, so to hear Microsoft announce today that it has attracted more than 1 million players in its first 48 hours is just par for the course. It's impressive, no doubt, but it's to be expected given PUBG's meteoric rise in popularity on PC.

Still, this success has Microsoft in the mood to celebrate. Microsoft revealed today that anyone who buys an Xbox One X in the lead up to the new year will be treated to a free copy of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. It isn't some huge deal, but it's definitely more than we'd expect given the fact that the Xbox One X is basically a brand new console.

If that free copy of PUBG is enough to get you to take the plunge on an Xbox One X, you'll want to wait just a little bit longer. This deal doesn't kick off until December 17, so it won't be available until Sunday. Once it's live, it'll be available until December 31, so you'll have two weeks to decide if this is something you want to take advantage of.

READ MORE: Xbox One X ReviewMicrosoft says that this deal is available in select regions, though it doesn't specify what those regions are. It also doesn't list any retail partners for this promotion, instead telling interested gamers to check with their local retail stores. It seems like a safe assumption that most nationwide retailers in the US – GameStop, Best Buy, Walmart, etc. – will be offering this promotion, but it's never a bad idea to call before heading out.

A word of warning, though: PUBG can be a little spotty on PC in terms of things like latency and frame rate, and those issues seem to translate to the Xbox One as well. While the Xbox One X will presumably help with those problems, PUBG is launching in Xbox Game Preview, meaning it's considered incomplete. More optimizations will come down the pipeline as time goes on, but if you're going to dive into PUBG through this deal, don't expect a seamless gaming experience right at the start.

If you feel you can live with those launch issues, then by all means give it a go. There's a reason PUBG has proven to be so popular with PC gamers, and that's because there isn't anything quite like it available today (though some competitors are gaining traction by trying to improve on PUBG's formula).
