VESA Embedded DisplayPort standard 1.4a supports up to 8k resolution

VESA has announced the publication of Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) standard version 1.4a. The new standard allows for higher video transfer data rates and increased panel resolution. It will also support greater color depth and higher refresh rates for video. The new standard incorporates VESA Display Stream Compression (DSC) standard v1.1.

Another feature of the new standard is a segmented panel architecture that will allow for higher panel resolution. The eDP v1.4a standard leverages the existing DisplayPort Standard 1.3 that was published last September as a base specification. The 8.1 Gbps per lane HBR3 link rate of the DisplayPort v1.3 standard is part of the eDP 1.4a standard.

VESA says that in embedded display applications, DSC is used to reduce the video interface data rate or decrease wire count reducing the display frame rate buffer size and reducing power usage to save battery life. One of the new features in eDP v1.4a is Multi-SST Operation known as MSO allowing the support of a new type of display architecture called Segmented Panel Display.

Segmented Panel Display is designed to allow for thinner, lighter, and lower cost panels that use less power. MSO will allow the four high-speed eDP lanes within the eDP interface to be divided up between two or four independent panel segments. eDP 1.4a is expected to be in used inside systems by 2016.
