Venom trailer 1 revealed: Still just a teaser
With Black Panther coming up next week and Avengers: Infinity War not far behind it, you'd be forgiven if you forgot that Sony is working on a standalone movie starring Venom. We are reminded that such a movie is in development with the arrival of its first teaser trailer today. The teaser gives us our first peek at Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, a journalist who eventually becomes Venom, antihero and occasional Spider-Man archvillian.
Unfortunately, those of you hoping to catch of glimpse of Venom himself are going to be disappointed. While we do see the alien symbiote that eventually merges with Brock, we don't actually get to see what Venom will look like in this movie. It seems that we'll have to wait for the next trailer for that particular reveal.

At this point, it's unclear if we can expect an appearance from Tom Holland's Spider-Man in Venom. Sony considers Venom to be part of the same universe as Spider-Man: Homecoming, and though Marvel has sent the opposite message in the past, it seems ridiculous to think that Venom and Spider-Man would never cross paths. Whether or not that crossover will happen in this movie – not if it will happen at all – seems to be the big question.
Indeed, if we're assuming that this movie follows established Spider-Man story arcs, then there is no Venom without Spider-Man. Peter Parker first encountered the black symbiote during a Marvel Comics arc called Secret Wars in the 1980s. After merging with the symbiote, Spider-Man gained enhanced powers, but he ultimately parted with the symbiote after discovering it was a living alien that required a host to survive.
Enter Eddie Brock, who shares a mutual hatred for Peter Parker with the symbiote. The two bond and the rest, as they say, is history. Venom is formed by their bond, resulting in one of the most popular comic book villains of the modern era. You can bet that those who grew up reading about Venom and Spider-Man's rivalry in the 1990s have high expectations for this movie, so here's hoping its good. Venom's first teaser is certainly intriguing, so fingers crossed that this means good things for the movie as a whole. Venom is out in theaters on October 5, 2018.
