Valve ditches Steam paid mod plan after backlash

A few days ago, we talked about the plans that Valve had put into place that would allow paid mods to be sold for Skyrim via the Steam Workshop. Those plans for paid mods didn't sit well with fans of Skyrim and Steam. The backlash against the plans was swift and brutal.

It appears that Valve has taken the hint that fans of Skyrim don't want to pay for mods and Valve has now removed paid mods for Skyrim from the Steam Workshop. In an official Steam Community post Valve admitted that rolling out paid mods in the established Skyrim mod community was "not the right place to start iterating."

Valve also ran into a problem with one of the first paid mods that went up for the game. That mod was a fishing mod that was removed because it used assets from a second mod from different creators. Valve maintains that its attempt at rolling out paid mods was aimed at improving modding for the creators and gamers.

It's hard to see how paying for something that was free previously is a good thing for gamers. Valve also stated, "We've done this because it's clear we didn't understand exactly what we were doing." I guess admitting you messed up is a start. Valve clearly notes that Skyrim wasn't the place to start. That means you can bet paid mods will turn up on other games with less established modding communities.
