Ubisoft Uplay+ subscription service released: Here are the basics

Back at E3 2019, Ubisoft made something of a surprise announcement, revealing that it was getting into the subscription game. Perhaps it shouldn't be that surprising considering how much entertainment companies seem to love the Netflix model these days, but regardless, Ubisoft's service is called Uplay+ and it's officially launching today.

What do you get with Uplay+? For as long as you stay subscribed, you get unlimited access to a significant portion of Ubisoft's PC library. Altogether, Ubisoft says that more than 100 games are available through Uplay+, with the full games lineup revealed back in July.

Subscribers will also get to play new Ubisoft games as they're released, with Ubisoft touting a few upcoming releases like Gods & Monsters, Watch Dogs Legion, and Ghost Recon Breakpoint here at this early stage. If a game that's available through Uplay+ has premium edition content, you'll be able to access that too, along with any DLC the game might have. Finally, subscribers to Uplay+ will also get to participate in beta and early access programs when they're available, potentially allowing them to play new games ahead of launch.

That isn't a bad feature set, but it remains to be seen if players will be willing to shell out $15 per month for a subscription service centered entirely around Ubisoft. Electronic Arts has seemingly found some success with its own subscription service, but EA is also a bigger publisher than Ubisoft is.

Still, Ubisoft does have some long-running series that could pull gamers in, including Assassin's Creed and its unending pile of Tom Clancy games. If you're on the fence, you can sign up now and take it for a test spin, with Ubisoft offering a free trial to the service that runs until September 30th. We'll see if Uplay+ sinks or swims, so stay tuned for that.
