Twist LED bulb plays music, mimics the sun

The days of light bulbs that can play music are upon us, and another option in the still sparse market has arisen: the Twist light bulb. Rather than using Bluetooth to connect to a mobile device, however, it can stream music over AirPlay and Wi-Fi. The speaker functionality is joined by LEDs and color that changes based on preference and the time of day. Says the maker, the light Twist gives off is a bluish white in the morning, and becomes a warmer color in the evening. In addition, the Twist bulb can mimic the sun's own patterns for better integration with your lighting system.

The idea behind speaker-equipped light bulbs is that they cover a couple different bases in a simple small package — if you need some light to read, click the light bulb on. If you want to listen to the latest episode of your favorite podcast instead, fire up the speaker function.

As far as more technical details go, Twist says its bulbs use 10 watts of power when in use, and they last for between 12 and 15 years. They adjust automatically based on the sun and whether it is night time (the light turns purple at night), and there is no app-based control, which may be a turn off for some users.

The Twist Light Bulb is available for purchase on the maker's website for $249 USD, which gets buyers a dimmer, one of the speaker-equipped bulbs, and two LED light bulbs. The dimmer is battery powered, making it simple for the non-electricians out there to get up and running. Shipping is set to start early next year.
