"TRON 3" production tipped to start October

Flynn Lives! Again! Or so we hope. Fans of the iconic sci-fi franchise who were left on the edge their seats for a sequal to 2010's hit TRON: Legacy will just have to wait for another year or so. But then again, they might be faced with an even bigger cliffhanger then. Industry buzz is claiming that the next TRON film will commence production this Fall and even have an exact October 5 date. And while the target premiere is still in 2016, don't bet on it giving you closure just yet.

Director Joseph Kosinski has been teasing the Legacy sequel since the second film came out and he has hinted that "TRON 3", which has yet to have a more formal title, will be akin to an "Empire Strikes Back", implying that the film will have a darker mood that will set the tone for a resolution that will arrive on yet another film in the future.

Of the Legacy cast, only Garrett Hedlund, who played Sam Flynn, has been confirmed to reprise his role. But given what has been said above, it would be too shocking if Olivia Wilde would not return. Bruce Boxleitner's role is still up in the air, though given the revelations about TRON (the character), he could pretty well make an appearance. Same goes for Jeff Bridges and CLU.

That said, the 2016 target seems pretty optimistic, given the short amount of time left and Disney being pretty wrapped up with multiple titles this year and the few years ahead. The team won't be starting from scratch, however, unlike TRON: Legacy, which could help reduce the time and resources needed. It also gives fans plenty of time to speculate and write up about what will happen to a world that is finally without Kevin Flynn.
