Today is 8th Gen Intel Core reveal day: First Wave Release Details

Intel just pulled the curtain from their 8th Gen Intel Core processor lineup, including Y, U, H, and S-Series processors. Four different processor products are being detailed, all from the U-Series (detailed below). This includes the i7-8650U, i7-8550U, i5-8350U, and i5-8250U, each aimed at the laptop category with 4 cores and 8 threads, ready to roll with 2-channel DDR4-2400 LPDDR3- 2133 memory and 620 UHD graphics.

The four series of 8th Gen Intel Core processors start with the Y-Series, for Always Connected PCs and Thin Fanless Detachables. The U-Series was made for Thin and Light Laptops, Convertibles, Minis, and 2 in 1 Computers. H-Series heads for Performance Laptops and Mobile Workstations, while the S-Series is made for Desktops of all sorts.

Today Intel launched their 8th Gen Intel Core i5 and i7 processors from 15W for 2 in 1s as well as ultrathin notebooks for both everyday average consumers and small businesses. That's the U-Series, and that's it – for now. In the "fall", Intel said today that it'd add Desktop processors as well as products for basically every other market.

The 8th Gen Intel CoreTM i7/i5 processors (U-series) will be first to market. September will be the month where devices from OEMs will start to be available with 8th Gen inside, and the rest will come "in the fall and beyond."

The biggest and most key claim made for this generation of processors is the following: "a boost of up to 40% gen over gen – and that jumps to 2X if you compare it with a 5-year old machine." Intel also talks about having the ability to get "up to 10 hours of 4K UHD local video" with one battery charge and editing video up to 14.7x faster than last year – but it all depends on the system, of course. We'll have to run these benchmarks ourselves to get the full story.
