Titanfall developer says it remains dedicated to the franchise

Fans of the multiplayer-only original Titanfall were treated to an excellent follow-up last year with Titanfall 2, however the continued release of maps and other DLC just hasn't been enough to give the game the shelf life it deserves. In a new interview, Vince Zampella, CEO of developer Respawn, has spoken about how several factors worked against Titanfall 2's release, as well as reaffirm that they are still dedicated to the franchise.

"The game was successful, it sold well, but it didn't quite sell as well as it should have. Maybe because it was super crowded, the pricing was aggressive—it was a rough window to launch our game," Zampella told Gamespot, referring to how Titanfall 2 launched alongside several other big-name games, including Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

"It's important for us to keep the franchise going. 'We're doing more Titanfall,' which is the quote I'm supposed to say. We have our franchise creative director, who's in charge of safeguarding the franchise in multiple formats and making sure it continues to grow. There's some other things we're doing that haven't been announced just yet, but we're heavily invested in the Titanfall universe."

While it was emphasized that Respawn remains "heavily invested" in the franchise, Zampella noted that the recent Frontier Defense update was probably the last new content release for Titanfall 2, as they "want to work on new stuff." The CEO didn't offer any hints on what that new stuff might be, sadly, so we're still a long ways off from a Titanfall 3 announcement.

However, there's still plenty of evidence that Respawn is interested in experimenting with the franchise beyond the standard console FPS title. While the previously announced Titanfall: Frontline — a card-based mobile game — was cancelled earlier this year, the mobile RTS Titanfall: Assault will be released on Android next week (iOS coming later this year).
