Tim Cook to Apple employees: 'we have great desktops' planned

Despite some speculation to the contrary, Apple remains committed to the Mac desktop, at least per messages posted by company CEO Tim Cook to Apple employees. "Some folks in the media have raised the question about whether we're committed to desktops," Cook posted, saying likewise that Apple has "great desktops in our roadmap. Nobody should worry about that."

Cook's comments were posted on a company message board visible to Apple employees. TechCrunch has posted the messages publicly, which includes Cook's addressing of the desktop concern. He went on to point out that desktops are 'critical' to some users, and are an important option in a world where laptops aren't ideal for every task.

There's no further information on what kind of desktops are on the company's roadmap, but it serves as a reassurance regardless. Of course, the new desktops (whatever they may be) will follow the newly unveiled MacBook Pro laptops Apple revealed in recent weeks. You can read our review of those laptops here.

Cook's full comments when asked about the desktop is as follows:

The desktop is very strategic for us. It's unique compared to the notebook because you can pack a lot more performance in a desktop — the largest screens, the most memory and storage, a greater variety of I/O, and fastest performance. So there are many different reasons why desktops are really important, and in some cases critical, to people.

The current generation iMac is the best desktop we have ever made and its beautiful Retina 5K display is the best desktop display in the world.

Some folks in the media have raised the question about whether we're committed to desktops. If there's any doubt about that with our teams, let me be very clear: we have great desktops in our roadmap. Nobody should worry about that.
