Tilt Brush VR painting app adds Beginner Mode for future pros

Google has a virtual reality app called Tilt Brush that changes the way humans create art. This painting app enables owners of certain VR headsets to paint in three-dimensional space, a rewarding experience that has resulted in some pretty incredible work. Switching from 2D to 3D painting environments can be tricky, though, so Google has added a new Beginner Mode to help users develop their skills.

Tilt Brush is available for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. With these headsets, the app enables users to create various works of art that only they can see...and directly within whatever room they're standing in. This can be used for fun or creative outlets, but also for developing models that can be visualized in an entirely new way.

The app has been around for about two years now; today's update brings it to Version 16. The change adds multiple new features and elements, not the least of which is a Beginner Mode to help users who feel overwhelmed. With this, new users will be given only a core set of tools to start with. Once they've spent some time creating, they'll level up to the "Advanced" mode that offers a wider tool range.

Beginner Mode aside, Tilt Brush Version 16 also adds new volumes and textures via a dozen new brushes. One brush, called Hull, enables users to create 3D objects simply by moving their VR controller around. As well, the app adds a new ambience — that is, new sound effects.

There's also a new Pin Tool that helps users lock objects into one position, making it easier to manipulate the region located around these objects. Google has also made it easier to retrieve the mirror tool. Finally, Version 16 has added a selection tool for selecting objects within a creation.
