The Solar Eclipse is suddenly an Android O countdown

Google has some good ideas for the Solar Eclipse that's about to blast its way over the United States, one of which involves Android. Users with devices like the Google Pixel will see an update to Android O (whose name will also be revealed) when the Solar Eclipse takes place. There'll be a big event in New York City to make the release of Android O all the more powerful.

Google's aim with the Eclipse event ties together the release of their next big version of Android. This version of Android was code-named Android O – a placeholder for whatever (sweet) name they have picked out. They've always named Android versions with desserts or candies before, and we have no big reason to suspect they wont again now.

The most likely name for this snack is Oreo. They've gone with a branded name before with KitKat, and Oreo is a snack cookie that's never been against cross-branding. Google leaves a few clues on their eclipse site which could just as easily be an eclipse as it could an O for Android O – or something else circular.

Google's promotional copy today included the words "bringing some super (sweet) new powers" – and "super (sweet) new powers" was repeated again several times in social media posts. On Twitter they go so far as to say "is it a bird, is it a plane", mixing the "super" part of the phrase with the whole "looking up to see the eclipse" deal.

Google also has a more Eclipse-specific element going this week with the Eclipse Megamovie 2017. Have a peek at the video below to see what that's all about.

On August 21st, 2017 at 2:40PM ET (that's 1:40 Central Time and 11:40 AM Pacific), the New York City-based event will begin. We'll be covering the whole event for you with up-to-the-minute updates right here on SlashGear – so hang out!
