The 2019 Mustang Shelby GT350 just went extra-hardcore

Ford may be riding high on the global sales success of the Mustang, but that doesn't mean it's not high time for a new 2019 Shelby GT350. Latest car to wear the storied nameplate, the new Mustang Shelby GT350 borrows liberally from the upcoming GT500, including the car's fiendishly clever aerodynamics.

Under the hood is the same 5.2 liter V8 we've grown to love, with its 526 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. It remains one of the few naturally aspirated big engines in the class, complete with a dreamily high 8,250 rpm redline. As before, it's paired with a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission, with no automatic option.

With the power the same, it's the way it's applied that has got an upgrade for the 2019 model year. The standard-fit MagneRide suspension has been reprogrammed, and there are recalibrated springs and new dampers to go with the active ride. The electronic stability control and power-assisted steering have also been reprogrammed with Ford Performance tweaks.

At the back, there's a completely new rear spoiler. That can be had with an optional Gurney flap, while the new grille close out has been developed after some new aero testing. Custom Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires have been fitted, with a tread specific to the GT350 and a new compound recipe. They're on 19-inch wheels, 295/35 at the front and 305/35 at the rear.

As for stopping, there are six piston front and four piston rear brakes, all developed by Brembo. Ford says the upshot overall is that the GT350 is happier both on the track and on the road, whether or not you're a pro-driver.

Inside, the dash is finished in machined aluminum, with carbon fiber an option. Miko suede door panel inserts can be had, while Recaro race seats are standard. Power seats with suede trim are options.

SYNC 3 with its 8-inch touchscreen is standard, but there's now a 12-speaker B&O PLAY audio system that can be paired with it. Dual zone climate control is now standard.

As for paint, there's now Velocity Blue and Ford Performance Blue for a GT-inspired look. Racing stripes can be had in black, white, or blue. Production and sales kick off in early 2019; pricing is yet to be confirmed, but every buyer gets a Ford Performance driving program session included.
