The 2019 BMW X7 is big, brash, and full of the latest tech

There's a new luxury SUV coming to town, and if you demand seven seats, striking style, and an M Sport package, the 2019 BMW X7 might be the truck for you. Sitting above the X5 as BMW's biggest, most lavish SUV option, the all-new X7 promises the best of the automaker's technology without sacrificing on comfort.

It's definitely distinctive, not least because of its size. At over 16 feet 10 inches long, 6.5 feet wide, and 5 feet 11 inches tall, road presence is guaranteed. BMW then adds what it describes as "a punchy, extremely prominent front end."

The evolution of the kidney grille is likely to be one of the most controversial style elements, the oversized sections looking almost like fangs in-between the squinting LED headlamps. The latter will offer BMW Laserlight upgrades in certain locations; standard is the sizable glass and two-section split tailgate. BMW doesn't stint on exterior chrome, either.

A big car needs big wheels, and so 20-inch light alloys are standard. 21- and 22-inch wheels are optional, as is an M Sport package. That gets special wheels, M Sport suspension and brakes, an M Sport exhaust system, and an M Aerodynamics package with special front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and wheel arches.

Alternatively, there's the X7 Design Pure Excellence package. That gets more styled underguards and bumpers, aluminum trim to the side windows, and wheel arches and side skirts in the body color. The B and C pillars are finished in high gloss black, and there are special 21- or 22-inch wheels. BMW also throws on aluminum roof rails, too.

Air springs front and rear, and adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers are standard. BMW is offering Integral Active Steering and Executive Drive Pro with active roll stabilization as options, together with an M Sport differential. An Off-Road package bolsters the all-terrain talents, with xSand, xGravel, xRocks, and xSnow drive modes.

BMW has four engines, though it's unclear which will come to the US at launch. Top of the tree is the 2019 X7 M50d and 2019 X7 xDrive50i. There's also the 2019 X7 xDrive30d and 2019 X7 xDrive40i.

Seven seats across three rows are standard; an option is two individual "comfort" seats in the middle row, for a total of six. Four-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and a three-section panoramic glass roof are also standard, as is Vernasca leather trim. The trunk comes in at 326 liters but can be expanded to 2,120 liters with the seats down.

Options include five-zone automatic climate control, an Ambient Air package, panoramic glass roof "Sky Lounge" with 15k+ illuminated graphic patterns, and a 20 speaker, 1,500W Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System. A third-generation head-up display packs in more information, while BMW Live Cockpit Professional is standard: that has fully digital graphics for the driver, on a 12.3-inch display, plus a second matching display for infotainment atop the center stack.

BMW isn't stinting on lavish features, either. There's a cooled and heated cupholder option, wireless charging for a smartphone, and "Crafted Clarity" glass trim option. A rear seat entertainment package adds two 10.2-inch touchscreens. Second and third row seats can be electronically controlled, with buttons in the trunk. BMW's Intelligent Personal Assistant – think Alexa, but controlling the car – is also included.

On the driver assistance side, there'll be active cruise control with stop & go, Driving Assistant Professional with steering and lane-control assistance, lane keeping assistance, cross-traffic warnings, and more. A Parking Assistant and Reversing Assistant will be standard.

Production will be at BMW's Spartanburg plant in the US, and BMW says the 2019 X7 is expected to launch in March 2019. Pricing will be confirmed closer to that point.
