Tesla's electric semi truck will be revealed in September

Though Tesla has built its image on electric vehicles aimed at the consumer space, long term success is going to depend on Tesla tackling the commercial space as well. In order to do that, it's going to need to build some bigger vehicles, and we're learning today that we'll see one of them later this year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed on Twitter today that his company will reveal its all electric semi truck in September.

Musk first revealed plans to develop an electric semi truck last year during an earnings call. He initially said that the truck would be revealed sometime in the middle of 2017, so while this reveal may have fallen a little behind schedule, it isn't off the mark by much.

Of course, a reveal is a lot different from a commercial roll out, and we probably won't see these trucks enter production until we're into 2018. Still, we should get a good idea of what to expect in terms of battery life and (hopefully) price, so there's still plenty of reason to be excited for September. In his tweet, Musk said that his team "has done an amazing job," calling the effort "seriously next level."

If that doesn't get you excited, here are a couple of other things that might: Musk also revealed via replies to other Twitter users that we'll see a Tesla-branded pick up truck revealed sometime in the next 18 to 24 months. Aside from that, he also said that the next roadster will be a convertible.

So, even though we don't know exactly when Tesla will reveal this semi truck, we know that any Telsa announcements scheduled for September will likely focus on it. It'll be interesting to see not only what Tesla has achieved, but also the market's reaction to this reveal. Semi trucks, after all, use a ton of gas, so developing an all electric one could be huge. Stay tuned.
