Telltale Games lays off most employees as part of "majority closure"

It's a sad day for Telltale Games, the studio behind many notable video games, including the episodic The Walking Dead series and more. The company revealed in a statement that it laid off the majority of its employees today, the remainder sticking around only to wrap up some business obligations for the board and company partners.

Telltale released its statement in a tweet today, revealing that has initiated the process of a "majority studio closure," one that involved the "majority of the company's employees" being dismissed from their jobs this morning. According to the company, only 25 workers remain and they're only there to fulfill certain obligations.

Telltale Games CEO Pete Hawley said:

It's been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry.

The studio has produced a notable lineup of video games, most of them with a unique style readily identifiable as a Telltale title. Among its most popular offerings is Minecraft: Story Mode, Batman: The Enemy Within, The Walking Dead Collection, and The Walking Dead: Story Builder.

Sources speaking to The Verge claim employees were informed about the layoff earlier today and were given half an hour to leave the premises. Reportedly no severances were given to laid off workers. The closure announcement follows a report in March alleging troubles behind closed doors, including allegations of chronic overwork among employees and toxic management.
