Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 hands-on

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 hands-on

MWC 2010 isn't our first encounter with the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10; after all, we joined the company in London back in November 2009 for the official launch of the Android smartphone.  What it is, though, is a good chance to catch up with a very much more optimized build.  The XPERIA X10's debut was marred by jittery performance and sluggishness in the company's custom apps, Mediascape and Timescape, leaving us somewhat unconvinced about the handset.  Happily - and handily, since Sony Ericsson tell us the X10 is mere weeks from launch in the UK - the current build is far more impressive.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini & mini pro hands-on

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini & mini pro hands-on

Biggest surprise about the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini and X10 mini pro?  Just how small the new Android smartphones are in the plastic.  We grabbed some hands-on time with both earlier today, and while they don't have the original X10's eye-catching 4-inch display they go some way to making up for it with extreme pocket-friendliness.  Check out the live photos and video demos after the cut.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini and X10 mini pro shrink Android

Remember Robyn, the compact version of Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X10 that we saw recently?  Well, the company has made it - the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini - official, along with a QWERTY-toting sibling, the XPERIA X10 mini pro.  Both smartphones run Android 1.6, complete with Sony Ericsson's Timescape and Mediascape apps, together with a 2.55-inch QVGA touchscreen and 3G models with both 900/2100 HSPA and 850/1900/2100 HSPA variants.

Android 2.0.1 dual-boot XPERIA X1 hack [Video]

Android 2.0.1 dual-boot XPERIA X1 hack [Video]

Over at xda-developers they're pathologically addicted to getting software to run on devices it was never intended to, and fed up of waiting for Sony Ericsson's debut into the Android ecosystem, the XPERIA X10, they've focused instead on getting Android onto an earlier phone.  Normally the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is found playing nicely with Windows Mobile, but you can now dual-boot it with that and Android 2.0.1.

Sony Ericsson Robyn (aka XPERIA 10 mini?) caught in wild

Now here's an interesting little leak for Sony Ericsson aficionados: GSMArena have been sent a couple of in-the-wild shots of what's tipped to be the Sony Ericsson Robyn (presumably an internal codename), a mini version of the XPERIA X10.  Details on the new smartphone are scant, though we know it has a touchscreen and runs Android.

Canada’s Rogers claim Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 for Q2 2010 North America debut

Canadian carrier Rogers Wireless has become the first to announce it will be offering the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, though neither carrier nor company are yet saying exactly when the Android smartphone will arrive.  Set to go on sale sometime in Q2 2010 – later than Sony Ericsson told us back at the handset’s launch – the XPERIA X10 will be a Rogers exclusive in the country, and will apparently “make its North American debut first in Canada”.

Sony Ericsson Nexus UX Platform WebSDK released for Android & Symbian Foundation development

We may be giving Sony Ericsson a darn good scolding on the one hand for their XPERIA X10 hijinks, but we’re a little more interested by their new WebSDK for Android and Symbian Foundation devices.  The Sony Ericsson WebSDK promises a metaphorical hand-holding for developers hoping to have their wares nestle up against the company’s own apps, whether that be on the XPERIA X10 or the SE Satio.  It’s called Nexus, seemingly the official title for the UX platform Sony Ericsson were talking about with regards the X10.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 February launch date yanked

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 February launch date yanked

Having tracked Sony Ericsson for years now, it comes as little surprise to see that, after plenty of happy noises about the apparently confirmed February 2010 release of the XPERIA X10, the company's online store has now whipped away the date details.  The "coming soon" page now merely says "to be announced" and reiterates the Q1 2010 window, which is all Sony Ericsson would tell us officially when the XPERIA X10 was announced a few weeks back.

No WinMo6.5 update for XPERIA X1 says Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson have confirmed that there will be no update to Windows Mobile 6.5 offered to owners of the XPERIA X1 smartphone, at least not officially through the company.  The news follows speculation about Sony Ericsson’s intent, after at least one developer got hold of a ROM that seemingly indicated an official update was planned.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 video demo: ah, there’s the Snapdragon speed

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 video demo: ah, there’s the Snapdragon speed

Sony Ericsson's launch event for the XPERIA X10, their first Android smartphone, was slightly undermined by the fact that their single demo prototype proved to be not exactly the Snapdragon speed-demon we all expected.  The company's homegrown Timescape and Mediascape apps ran like molasses in a permafrost, which Sony Ericsson told us was due to them not having been optimized for the hardware.  Happily HDblog have had access to a newer prototype, and theirs looks positively snappy.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 coming Feb 2010 says official store

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 coming Feb 2010 says official store

Sony Ericsson weren't, to be fair, being all that coy about their launch plans for the XPERIA X10 Android smartphone back at its launch a few weeks ago: asked when it was likely the touchscreen Snapdragon handset would arrive within its "Q1 2010" window, the SE exec told us "it's not going to be the beginning or the end of the quarter".  We presumed a February release, then, likely around or about Mobile World Congress, and sure enough Sony Ericsson's own online store are suggesting a February arrival for the X10.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 gets official: Hands-on Video Demo

Sony Ericsson have finally come clean on their latest smartphone, and as expected it's an Android flagship. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 - previously known as the Rachael and the X3 - is a Snapdragon-based touchscreen candybar, with a huge display, 8.1-megapixel camera and some "special sauce" in the shape of two homegrown applications - for communication aggregation and media aggregation - with a custom UI. SlashGear caught up with Sony Ericsson in London yesterday to take a look at the new smartphone, and find out why the company reckons this is the launch not only of the Android X10 but of a new "user experience platform".
