Strava Wear OS 3 app could be the start of a worrying trend

Strava Wear OS 3 app could be the start of a worrying trend

There has been renewed vigor in the Wear OS ecosystem party thanks to the announcement of the big Wear OS upgrade soon and partly due to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, the first and so far only to use Wear OS 3. That excitement, however, was quickly doused by the cold reality that not all smartwatches will be updated to Wear OS 3, though, to some extent, that wasn't totally unexpected, even if completely disappointing. What is unexpected and puzzling, however, is the software support between Wear OS versions, as exemplified not just by Google but also by Strava.

Galaxy Watch 4 Walkie Talkie app catches up with the Apple Watch

Smartwatches have been around for years now, and Apple has managed to keep its spot at the top despite the number of Android Wear, now Wear OS, devices in the market. In terms of platform features, the Apple Watch is arguably ahead of the race, but Wear OS isn't that far behind. Samsung's new Galaxy Watch 4 series seems to push Google's wearable platform to new heights, and it is getting a long-delayed feature that, somewhat ironically, still leaves Wear OS one step behind.

YouTube Music Wear OS app arrives only for the Galaxy Watch 4

The irony hasn't escaped most people's attention that Google's wearable platform doesn't have an app for Google's music streaming service. Adding insult to injury, Google did launch a YouTube Music app for smartwatches but only for Apple's smartwatches. At long last, a Wear OS version of that app has finally been announced and has started rolling out, but it still won't placate Wear OS owners because it will only serve the few dozen new owners of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series.

Spotify Wear OS app with offline listening feature is now available

Google seemed to be all in on the upcoming Wear OS 3, but it threw existing Wear OS users a bone a few weeks ago. Some features that are headed for the next version of the wearable platform will also find their way to existing smartwatches. Fortunately, some app developers aren't limiting their new features to Wear OS 3 either, and Spotify has announced much-needed offline listening support that's heading to all Wear OS users. That update is finally making its way to smartwatches, but a few users seem to be unsatisfied with some aspects.

Fossil Gen 6 smartwatch leaks, Wear OS 3 not included

The launch of the Galaxy Watch 4 series may have excited Wear OS fans because of the upcoming upgrade to their favorite wearable platform, but not everyone is a fan of Samsung or its One UI based on its old Tizen wearable OS. They would prefer Wear OS smartwatches from other brands, but they might have to wait for those to come with Wear OS 3 out of the box. In the meantime, however, those brands keep on churning out new smartwatches, like the Fossil Gen 6 that is now getting the leak treatment after the company officially teased its existence last week.

Galaxy Watch 4 says no to iPhone, will Wear OS follow suit?

Google confirmed this week that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 requires a Google-approved Android device to activate. More specifically, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 must be "activated" with a device that runs Android and is equipped with Google Mobile Services. "That is the case for the Galaxy Watch4," said a Google representative, but "we have nothing to share at this time for future devices with Wear OS 3."

Wear OS 2 is also getting some Wear OS 3 features

The launch of the Galaxy Watch 4 series marked a new chapter in Wear OS history. New features, including the ability to use OEM skins on top of the platform, are coming alongside performance improvements under the hood. Some of these features might be exclusive to Wear OS 3 smartwatches, which currently only have one representative, but owners of Wear OS 2 devices need not be too jealous as some important features will be arriving on their own smartwatches in the coming weeks.

Wear OS YouTube Music app update enables offline music machines

Wear OS YouTube Music app update enables offline music machines

There's a new YouTube Music app coming to Wear OS devices that'll make said devices into mobile music monsters. In the past we had MP3 players - little iPods, Zune, and so forth that we'd strap to our arm and connect to our heads with wired earbuds when we went for a run. Now, with an app like YouTube Music (with a YouTube Music Premium subscription) there's a way to download music "for ad-free offline listening" without a mobile connection or connection to a smartphone.

Samsung Exynos W920 officially confirmed coming to the Galaxy Watch 4

It does so by announcing beforehand some of the technologies and features that will be seen in the next product launch. With less than 36 hours left before Unpacked 2021, Samsung is doing exactly that with the Galaxy Watch 4, revealing the brains behind what could be the most interesting Wear OS smartwatch to launch in a long while.
