Vivo NEX 3 5G might be taking two steps forward, one step back

Vivo NEX 3 5G might be taking two steps forward, one step back

Vivo has always been trying to make headlines by being the first in many new mobile technologies but it really gained international fame with the Vivo NEX S. It was the first phone to resort to an elevating camera to get rid of much of the phone's bezel, giving birth to a niche line of phones that did the same. With the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition and the Vivo APEX 2019, it almost seemed like the phone maker was heading towards a certain direction. The Vivo NEX 3 5G teaser, however, may suggest otherwise and hints at a sort of return to normalcy with at least two key features to still boast of.

Did Vivo make the perfect glass phone?

Did Vivo make the perfect glass phone?

Today the glass front and back of the next Vivo phone were leaked by the leakster known as Ice Universe. This person is generally known for leaking the likes of Samsung Galaxy smartphones, but they've occasionally done a Vivo or Vivo-like leak or two, all of which seem to have turned out fairly accurate for final products. Today the leak has to do with what's likely called the Vivo NEX 3 - a device that might just have found the perfect formula for an all-glass phone.

Vivo AR Glass and 120W Super FlashCharge get ready for a 5G world

OEMs and especially network operators are buzzing about 5G but not many of them talk about the practical use of the new technology apart from insanely fast downloads and lag-free streaming. 5G, in theory, enables new experiences not possible on mobile before but also requires newer technologies to keep up with the demand. At MWC Shanghai 2019, Vivo is showing off its 5G play which includes AR glasses to take advantage of those speeds, 120W charging to keep phones powered on, and a 5G phone at the center of it all.

Finally, Android lets me turn off all phone sensors

Vivo might use Energous WattUp over the air charging tech soon

Vivo might use Energous WattUp over the air charging tech soon

Vivo might call dibs on innovations like the in-screen fingerprint scanner, the first elevating camera, dual displays, or seamless button-less phones, but when it comes to battery charging tech, its cousin OPPO has a head start. That might not be true for long as the Chinese manufacturer strikes up a partnership with Energous to bring the latter's over-the-air "true" wireless charging technology to future generations of Vivo smartphones.

Vivo V15 Pro hands-on: bringing cutting-edge tech to the masses

Vivo V15 Pro hands-on: bringing cutting-edge tech to the masses

Vivo was the first phone maker to come up with the elevating camera solution to bezels, a design that has been copied or modified by others. With the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition and Vivo APEX 2019 concept, it almost seemed that the company was abandoning its own innovation. Not quite. Instead, Vivo is actually making that innovation accessible to more users by putting it in its latest V series phone, the Vivo V15Pro. With that elevating camera, a triple camera system, and more AI features than you can remember, the Vivo V15Pro aims to bring cutting-edge technology, and buzzwords, to a broader market.

Vivo V15 Pro will have a 32MB selfie camera

Vivo V15 Pro will have a 32MB selfie camera

Last year, Vivo launched a rather interesting solution to notches in its Vivo NEX S: a pop-up front facing camera. It was certainly a neat idea, especially if you hate notches in any form, because it means no cutouts on your nice edge-to-edge display. For as novel as the idea is, it's one that hasn't really caught on in the world of smartphone design, as many manufacturers seem to be gravitating toward hole-punch cutouts on the display for their selfie cameras.

Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition teardown reveals potential problems

Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition teardown reveals potential problems

Some Chinese companies are taking the risks bigger OEMs don’t want to make to find alternative solutions for the design problems that plague smartphones these days. Though not actually the first (Russian company Yota can have that title), ZTE’s nubia and Vivo have both come out with smartphones that not only have a screen on both sides, they’ve also survived JerryRigEverything’s tests. Now all that’s left is to open up the Vivo NEX DDE to see what’s inside, hopefully without breaking anything.

Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition durability test impresses

Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition durability test impresses

With the rise of unconventional smartphone designs, from elevating cameras to sliding backs to button-less whole slabs of glass, users might be left wondering if all these fanciness comes at the price of durability and reliability. The good news is that phones have become even more resilient these, even if it means they're harder to repair, too. The slightly bad news is that not all of them are that durable. With two screens front and back, the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition almost begs to be tested. Fortunately, JerryRigEverything was only too happy to oblige.
