Vivo in-display fingerprint scanning phone ready for production

Vivo in-display fingerprint scanning phone ready for production

There were no sensational new smartphones announced at CES this year, but there is one that is at least promising to do that very soon. No, not the Galaxy S9 or any foldable phone. Chinese OEM Vivo, which some might be surprised to know is one of the world’s top 5 phone makers, is showing of what is still a prototype of a smartphone that is ready for mass production. But while the smartphone itself might be a bit nondescript at this point, it has one feature no other smartphone has yet: a fingerprint scanner embedded in the screen.

Synaptics in-screen fingerprint scanner to debut in Vivo

Human Interface Device (HID) expert Synaptics might be grasping at straws to salvage what it can from its much-delayed in-display fingerprint sensor. It recently announced that the sensor, the Clear ID FS9500, has gone into mass production with one of the five Tier 1 smartphone makers in the world. Not leaving much time for a guessing game, Synaptics has finally revealed who that OEM is, and it is none other than Vivo who, just a few months ago, flaunted Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor instead.

Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is Vivo’s secret weapon

Although fingerprint scanners hiding underneath glass displays is quite the hot topic in smartphones these days, the dream isn't actually new. It has been around a few years back and some even had nearly working solutions. One of those is Qualcomm and it is now reminding everyone of that. At MWC Shanghai, the mobile chip maker will be showing off its latest ultrasonic fingerprint scanner running underneath the display of an actual commercial smartphone. And, in a way, it will be showing Samsung what it might be missing out on.

Vivo might be the first to have onscreen fingerprint scanner

One of the advantages that Chinese smartphone makers have is that they are able to take bigger risks and jump on fads faster than more mainstream giants. And when it comes to jumping on fads, there is probably no OEM quicker or bolder than Vivo. The company was one of the first to reach the thinnest mark and was one of the first to come out with 6 GB of RAM. Now it might also be the first to have a fingerprint sensor embedded in the screen, beating Samsung and Apple to the punch.

Vivo Xplay5 arrives looking like an iPhone edge you can’t have

That might definitely sound like flame/link bait, but that is undoubtedly the first thing that will come to mind when you see Vivo's latest flagship, front and back. You'll probably forget for a while that it does have the boasted 6 GB of RAM, at least in one configuration. Like something almost too good to be true, the Vivo Xplay5 mixes almost everything you'd want in a high end smartphone this year, though curiously misses out on a two or three features. Sadly, even if you were willing to accept those flaws, it's not something easily accessible to everyone everywhere.

Vivo Xplay 5 specs, photos leaked, 6GB RAM inbound

Chinese smartphone OEMs seem to be beset, warranted or not, by two stereotypes. One is that they are quite talented at "mirroring" the latest design trends. The second is that they can get pretty crazy when it comes to features. Just like this latest leak coming out of the country regarding Vivo's upcoming Xplay 5 smartphone. If one of the rumored details about it is true, then it could very well be the world's first smartphone with 6 GB of RAM, possibly even beating Samsung's Galaxy Note 6.

Vivo X6 and Plus released, both join the HTC/iPhone lookalike club

This week the folks at Vivo have decided to reveal a set of device by the name of Vivo X6 and Vivo X6 Plus. These devices should look fairly familiar to you. They have a set of details that will remind you instantly of either an HTC One or an iPhone, depending on what you're more familiar with. They might even remind you of a Samsung Galaxy S6.
