The remastered version of StarCraft first detailed back in March is now available for pre-order and an official availability date has been revealed: August 14. Once it arrives, StarCraft fans will be able to enjoy the classic game in overhauled 4K Ultra HD graphics alongside enhanced audio and more. Those who pre-order will get several exclusive perks, as well, including skins.

While going retro is still a strong trend in the gaming industry, not all are willing to go back to the 8 and 16 bit games of their childhood. That, or their childhood never really wet back that far. Some of today's gamers, instead, grew up with games like Diablo and StarCraft. Sensing the potential cash cow, Blizzard announced last March that it would also be going retro in the way it best knows, giving StarCraft a 4K facelift. Those patiently waiting to relive their childhood, or live it for the first time, can now put in a pre-order for the game ahead of its August launch.

StarCraft gets its first patch in 8 years, finally goes free

It isn't that uncommon for software to stop receiving updates years after it has been launched. After all, even Microsoft just recently did that with Vista. That is even truer for games, whose lifespans are a lot shorter than operating systems. Unless you're talking about StarCraft, which many loved and still love to play. While the game, which launched in 1998, formally stopped getting updates more than 8 years ago, Blizzard has restarted the development machine as it re-launches the real-time strategy game, this time for free.
