The slammed, lifted, crazy cars of SEMA 2015

The slammed, lifted, crazy cars of SEMA 2015

I honestly wondered if the air suspension was broken when I saw my first slammed truck at SEMA 2015 this week. So close to the ground that a vole couldn't squeeze beneath the undercarriage and the parking lot, and with the vast wheels pushed so high into the arches that you'd seriously doubt they could rotate, never mind turn for corners, it turned out the effect was not only intentional, but repeated on several cars and trucks around the show.

Mazda’s vintage-inspired MX-5 concepts are begging to be built

Mazda’s vintage-inspired MX-5 concepts are begging to be built

Mazda's striking 2016 MX-5 Miata wasn't in short supply at SEMA 2015, but none were so compelling as the company's own customs. The Mazda stand may have been minimalistic, but that only worked in the favor of the MX-5 Speedster Concept and the MX-5 Spyder Concept; if Miata fans aren't already demanding production plans for one or both, then it's only a matter of time.

Toyota Tundrasine Concept is an odd pickup, limo hybrid

Toyota Tundrasine Concept is an odd pickup, limo hybrid

We've seen a lot of concept cars before, most of them rather futuristic, some bordering on the absurd. One of the concepts that Toyota just revealed at the Specialty Equipment Market Association, or SEMA, show stands somewhere in between and definitely takes the cake. It's a Tundra pickup truck. It's a limosine. No, it's a Tundrasine pickup limosine. Takings its Tundra model to new lengths, literally, Toyota's idea is to offer the versatility and power of a pickup with the luxury and comfort of a limosine.

This is Local Motors 3D printed car: It could change everything

3D printing may be mainstream enough not to raise an eyebrow any more, but Local Motors' plan to print cars is still ambitiously unusual. Kia’s chopped and dropped custom quartet hits SEMA 2015

A mobile photo editing studio with slide-out seating, a mud-loving off-road buggy, and a sensible sedan turned chopped custom: Kia has gone a little crazy for SEMA 2015. The Korean car company, celebrating its fourteen year rise from the bottom of the J.D. Power rankings to its current spot in second place - just behind Porsche, fact-fans - has brought a quartet of new one-offs to the annual custom car show in Las Vegas, some more ridiculous than others.

Forget hoverboards, this 3D printed electric skateboard is cooler

Hoverboards that don't really hover may be fashionable right now, but a 3D printed open-source electric skateboard has the potential for far more impact. Faraday Motion's HyperBoard R2, tucked away at the Stratasys booth at SEMA 2015 this week, takes the flexibility of custom 3D printing and uses it to deliver a personal transporter that can be adapted to the needs - and budget - of each user.
