Galaxy S9 pre-release specs and rumors update

Today we've got an updated list of what we expect will be the Samsung Galaxy S9 specs, top to bottom. This includes the standard Samsung Galaxy S9 as well as the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, formerly known as Edge. These specs should hold mostly accurate unless Samsung throws a giant wrench in the mix before they make their devices live in full effect this February - another most-likely situation.

Galaxy S9, S9+ HTML 5 test confirms screen resolution

Galaxy S9, S9+ HTML 5 test confirms screen resolution

Is there anything yet that we don’t know about the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+? At least as far as unofficial information goes? Probably not, but it never hurts to have some “independent” confirmation. That confirmation comes from the HTML5test tool that, unsurprisingly, benchmark’s a phone’s, or rather a browser on a phone, performance in rendering HTML 5 compliant web pages. Fortunately, it also hints at something we’ve already expected the Galaxy S9 and S9+ to have: tall, 18.5:9 screens.

Galaxy S9+ at Geekbench finally offers a tiny piece of hope

Galaxy S9+ at Geekbench finally offers a tiny piece of hope

From the Galaxy S9 to the Nokia 9 to Sony Xperias, next year’s first batch of smartphones might not welcome the new year in a big way. After 2017’s rather exciting if not tumultuous story, 2018 might be off to a somewhat somber start instead. That’s not always a bad thing, but it can be a boring thing. Samsung fans, however, might at least have the Galaxy S9+ to look forward to, if this Geekbench entry is any indication.

Galaxy S9 single camera confirmed by back panel leak

Galaxy S9 single camera confirmed by back panel leak

Warranted or not, the Galaxy S9’s lack of a second camera on its back is probably going to be its biggest criticism. Maybe it’s only criticism even. The disappointing feature, or rather the lack of it, is already gaining mass like a snowball rolling down hill, with every new leak seemingly confirming that “fact”. As if it weren’t enough, another one pops up at Chinese social network Weibo, where alleged backplates of the Galaxy S9 are shown off, offering no hope for those wishing for a smaller yet capable Samsung flagship next year.

Galaxy S9’s early 2018 is under pressure

There has been a lot of talk about the Galaxy S9 in recent weeks and months. Much of the speculation has centered around the phone's release date, with some rumors claiming that the Galaxy S9's reveal could come as early as CES 2018. While a CES reveal is looking increasingly unlikely, the Galaxy S9 could still be heading for an earlier reveal than most of Samsung's spring flagships.

Here are some more Galaxy S9 renders

Unlike this year’s Samsung flagships, it seems that next year’s Galaxy S9 will be playing it safer. A lot safer. While it will obviously have most of the latest hardware, though not all, word on the rumor mill is that those will be all that the Galaxy S9 will have. That does seem to be now accepted fate, especially with the renders OnLeaks made, based on schematics and leaks, showing off a rather familiar-looking Galaxy S9.

There’s bad Galaxy S9 news for CES 2018

There’s bad Galaxy S9 news for CES 2018

If you were hoping to get a look at Samsung's upcoming flagship Galaxy phone during CES 2018 next month, we have some bad news. Sources claim Samsung will be showing off some of its phones at the event in January, as well as LG, but the showcase will involve "low-end" handsets. That will include the Samsung A8 and A8 Plus 2018 models, both rumored to feature the long Infinity Display and certain Bixby functions. The Galaxy S9 is another matter.

A safe Galaxy S9 gives LG a huge opportunity in 2018

A safe Galaxy S9 gives LG a huge opportunity in 2018

As the Galaxy S9 approaches, you'd be forgiven for thinking smartphones in 2018 will be a battle between Samsung and Apple. Don't count LG out of the game quite yet, mind. Even though the rumors around the Galaxy S9 have been far more plentiful than those detailing next year's LG G7, that's not to say 2018 won't give "the other" South Korean phone-maker a rare opportunity to differentiate itself.

The Galaxy S9 must fix these three big S8 flaws

The Galaxy S9 must fix these three big S8 flaws

2017 had a bumper crop of smartphones, but the mobile world refuses to slow, and all eyes are on the Samsung Galaxy S9 in 2018. The company's flagship consumer phone - since, it would likely argue, the Galaxy Note 8 and its eventual successor are targeted at prosumers - has big shoes to fill, coming on the heels of the generally well-received Galaxy S8. Still, that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement.
